@andygev35, well it's a long weekend here with Monday off so shall probably loop back to this tomorrow or if not then, over the weekend.

If I cannot get it to work, it might not be the end of the world for me as the one game I do generally play is on MacOS. Will see how that runs tonight however it's still a bit of a waste. I was hoping to play Doom Eternal. Might just have to try Steam streaming from one of the kids PC's I guess if we cannot get this working.

@james_bland, my 10th Gen i5 MBP will be here tomorrow, so I'll be working at it over the weekend as well.  Fingers crossed.

@eightarmedpet, I tested with apple_set_os loader v0.5 but it still gave me error 12.

@chefkoch, I've forgotten a lot of what I've read previously but I never had much luck with apple_set_os. I used rEFInd or the EFI Bootloader but I'm not sure if they will work here.

Just so everyone's clear, macs with the T2 chip should use @aa15032261's modification to apple_set_os, not 0xbb's original. The reference to v0.5 suggests @chefkoch is rightly trying aa15032261's version with Core X + RX580.

I would just be careful with the timing: egpu starts unplugged, boot to apple_set_os, wait for the text and the igpu to fully load, hotplug, wait a second or two after apple_set_os recognizes the egpu, then hit any key to continue booting to Win10. You have to be ready to hotplug quickly, as soon as the text appears, in order to do all of the above before the timer runs out.

@eightarmedpet, not yet. Only just got the graphics card and the Mac has about a week or so. Haven’t had a Mac for about 5 odd years so will need to read more about those options.

Would any of you daring people mind try switching to the Windows 10 Insider builds, with the "Fast" ring selected instead of the "Slow" one? I saw https://egpu.io/forums/bootcamp/error-12-on-bootcamp-has-been-fixed-by-microsoft-in-windows-insider-fast/ which suggests that it fixes the error 12 issues entirely, and the lack of eGPU support is honestly the one thing that's keeping me from going to the nearest Apple Store and picking up the 2020 Ice Lake MBP tomorrow...

edit: well, I totally skipped over that part from the first post.......

To do: Create my signature with system and expected eGPU configuration information to give context to my posts. I have no builds.

Been doing a few more tests quickly and some thoughts, not tried Bootcamp again yet though:

  • Trying DOTA 2 on the MacBook in MacOS last night plus CS GO it just seemed to have some lag spikes here and there. I tried OpenGL and Vulkan on DOTA 2 but it's there on both.
  • Going from 1080p to 4K on DOTA 2 with the 5700XT doesn't really change the frame rates and looking at GPU utilisation it's not hitting 100% even at 4K so seems CPU, bus or some other limit going on here
  • Went back to my Lenovo T480s which is on 2004 Slow Ring and it gave me a Code 12 actually when I hot plugged the GPU. It's fine however if I boot up with the eGPU plugged in however.
  • DOTA 2 on that has similar though not quite as bad as MacOS lag spikes. Again 1080p to 4K is fine and it's not hitting the limits but it also can drop below 60fps in all res to 30 or less for a second or two. The Nvidia 1050GTX had no such issues and in 1080p would sit at 60fps with vsync on all day long (Running about 70 - 80% of it's GPU capacity so much slower card obviously)

I've not had an AMD card for donkey's years because in a past life the drivers just weren't as good as Nvidia's. It seems like even now they just don't run stuff as well as Nvidia does.

Going to need a lot of testing over this weekend to workout where to go from here. It would seem an eGPU though which cannot run games in MacOS smoothly, doesn't work in Bootcamp isn't of much use. The iGPU can drive my 2 x 4k screens just fine on it's own so I don't need it for that either.

Must be some solution to this... Maybe I've already installed too much junk on MacOS Smile

@john_karabudak, I already tried that and it didn't work for me. Still Code 12 I'm afraid.
