@chefkoch, what, did you expect him to just tell us?

@doctorez, I have the same spec MBP coming soon. Wasn't planning to get that much of a GPU but hey, can't argue with science.

If you don't mind, when you get a chance could you add your build to the completed builds so everyone can keep track of what works with what?

eGPU: TBD depending on what happens on the ice lake thread

Guys, rEFInd or EFI Bootloader.

^^^This.

@chefkoch, I already linked instructions for apple_set_os earlier in the thread.

What has worked so far on recent T2 macs:

1. Boot to Recovery, turn off boot security and enable booting external media.
2. Install Windows. v1903 .30 to .295 have been most reliable. You can also try latest fast insider build, but be prepared to try pci.sys hack if it doesn't work. You can also try an older version (v1803 I believe?).
3. Set up EFI bootloader. For apple_set_os installed to internal drive, follow the instructions above. You could also try apple_set_os on external flash drive. For apple_set_os + rEFInd on an external flash drive, see the Mac Mini build in my sig. You can also try rEFInd on its own, or goalque's automate-EGPU.efi.
4. If still error 12: try either hot plug at Windows desktop, or port dance (steps #3–6 in "Boot to Windows with eGPU" section of instructions above). Note the timing for port dance. It is not cold plug, but plug at apple_set_os dialogue. And it is left-right-left. Obviously you could try other port combinations. Whether hot plug or port dance, do not be impatient on final plug-in: allow Win10 to settle and process.

@james_bland, nearly there, getting beyond code 12 and being able to install drivers is a big step; now it's just a question of repeating it. I assume you are switching from left to right because you still have error 12 when just using apple_set_os and a single plug-in? I would try no port dance first. And you described plugging left-right. Port dance is left-right-left. Also, apple_set_os should load on reboot, so perhaps if you fix that you will be good to go.

New macs are aware of large memory space and DSDT hack shouldn't be needed.

@sdedalus1, okay, thanks for your explanation. I think I already did all of these without success.

@shellshocked, you could try reading one of the builds in my signature or one of the links in the main menu? This threads becoming an echo chamber.

@eightarmedpet, unfortunately the solutions that worked for your 2017 hardware are not working for the 2020 10th Gen models.  Keep in mind that these new models have the Thunderbolt controllers integrated into the cpu for the first time.  So your "echo chamber" chamber comment is a bit inappropriate.

  • @andygev35,  thanks for the info. But I don’t believe my echo chamber comment is inappropriate, everyone here is going round in circles and apparently not trying previous solutions. Totally understand if they don’t work but I believe it was the third time I mentioned those solutions with no one commenting in whether they work or not.
  • just to be 100% clear, you’ve tried both the solutions I mentioned?

I've tried  @aa15032261's modification to apple_set_os, rEFInd, on 1903 v1, 1809, and even on an enterprise LTS build.  Boot security is disabled as well as SIP.  Booting from external devices is enabled.

@andygev35, rEFInd is one, the EFI bootloader is the other, I’m not sure if they will work but I have repeatedly said they’ve worked for my different year 13 inch.

@andygev35, agreed. I cannot get the previous solutions to work either with the 2020 Ice Lake models. Nvidia did for me but AMD seems impossible at the moment. It's either going to need MS to update Windows to solve this or a new modification that solves it.

I'm not sure AMD can solve it via a driver, it seems to be how they've set their hardware to work.

MacBook Pro 13 2020 (10nm Ice Lake), i7 2.3Ghz, 32GB RAM, 2TB SSD. Razer Core X working with Nvidia 1080 GTX in BootCamp. AMD 5700XT coming soon...

I was able to pair RX 5700 eGPU with the Ice Lake MacBook Pro in Boot Camp. Windows 10 1903 V1 (18362.30 - .295) was the prerequisite. Hot-plug works well. Cold-plug can work with an EFI Boot loader. I'm putting together a build guide and step-by-step instructions soon.
