@rasel800, Thanks, so strange. I tried a simple boot with no changes and still error 12. Maybe it's the 2080 Ti or the Aorus gaming box but no matter what I do I cannot get it to work.

I decided that I am going to return it because the NVIDIA GPU also doesn't work under Mac OS anyway. I'm going to try a 5700 XT with a Razer Core X coral at the weekend (on order). Hopefully at some point soon AMD will release a GPU with ray tracing and I can move to that.

@snoek, were you able to get the Vega 64 working with the Breakaway Box on the new 2020 Ice Lake MBP? If so, why are you switching to 5700 XT and Razer Core X

Has anyone else been able to get Sonnet's Breakaway Boxes to work with AMD cards and the new MBP? All the available build pages are using the Razer Core X or Chroma. According to the eGPU box comparison sheet they are Ti83 based and have the same TB3 controller so I would hope the Breakaway boxes would also work...

I will be attempting to get the Breakaway 350 with RX580 to work with the Ice Lake i7 with 4 TB ports in a few weeks... hoping someone will have had a good experience by then since I really don't want to spend money on a Razer Core X

@dontdo_that, Hello,

Yes, when following the instructions in This Vega 56 build I had absolutely no problems with my Sonnet Breakaway 650 box and Asus Vega 64. I would say that make sure you use the exact same Windows build and download the Adrenaline driver (that seemed to make all the difference rather than the normal driver).

I gave my son my old laptop (it's the reason I bought a new one, home school at the moment) and so I want to give him that eGPU so he can also do some gaming. I ordered the 5700 XT because it seems to be the best AMD card that I can get right now (very interested in any recommendations on something better but I wish they had ray tracing) and the Razer X enclosure also seemed to be the best option.

@snoek, that's great news about the Breakaway boxes. Thanks! The 5700 XT is a great choice, good value for the performance.

So I simply plugged in the Razer Core X Coral with the 5700 XT in the to the same MacBook I had previously set up for the Vega 64. It recognised the card and I ran the same adrenaline installer, that removed the previous driver I had setup and installed the correct own and after a reboot all worked flawlessly.

i wonder why the AMD graphics work okay but the NVIDA were a disaster for me?

After all this I think I might just stump up and buy a very high spec gaming PC to compare what sort of graphics I can get if I buy something truly awesome.

@snoek, how does the 5700XT compare with the Vega 64?  Can you do some comparison benchmarks from Bootcamp?  Just wondering if it might be worth the upgrade from my Vega 56.

@andygev35, I have got 3D Mark and ran tests on both boxes:

Vega 64 in Sonnet 650:

3CED0182 5BD7 40C2 BF3C 0358B323890D

AMD 5700 XT in Razer Core X Coral:

(Sorry I just took photos of the screen with my phone as I don’t use Windows for anything other than gaming)

@snoek, thank you.  That’s a nice improvement over the 64, probably considerably better than the 56.

@andygev35, Yes, it’s much better.

GTA V I was basically able to max everything out except the thing that says X4, I can’t remember what the setting is called.

@snoek, I have a Sapphire Pulse RX 5700 XT on the way.  I’ll probably post another build with that card, using the latest Windows build and the pci.sys swap.
