on your win10 2004 set are both screens working?

Yes, although I use the MBP in closed display mode (clamshell).

  • I cannot re-enable any of the PCI root ports. As soon as I do I get Error 12 again
  • The good thing: disabling PCI Root 1-3 again and rebooting fixes the problem again
  • Hot plugging does not work. Error 12.

Any ideas what I am doing differently?

I don't think you're doing anything differently.  Cold plugging is the only thing working for me, and I don't re-enable the PCI Root Ports either since the eGPU is the only TB3 device I own.  USB functionality is unaffected by disabling PCI access to these ports.

@andygev35, thank you very much for your feedback. Glad to hear that for pretty much identical setups the system behaves identical. So I leave it at that for the time being. external IcyBox SSD works fine on the USB-C ports without PCI express.

@andygev35, Hi there I noticed last night that my 2020 mbp runs heaven at 64 fps vs my 2018 mbp 74 fps on same setting ultra extreme 8AA at 1440. Mind you the 2018 runs on w10 1903 the 2020 w10 2004. By the way on heaven the system is listed as Windows NT 6.2 ????? Used ultra performance power mode  in both ensuring that usb pci etc power saving is disabled . .

Have you had the igpu reenabled ? I have reenabled mine.

In addition I set up display setting as extended display and choose ext display as main, But always windows reverts to the mbp display as main. (I suppose the the main display is the one highlighted )

By the way how do you do clamshell mode on I tried to close the lid but the system goes off. Sorry not very good with windows.

You'll need to go to Settings-->System-->Power&Sleep-->Additional Power Settings and in the left column, "Choose what closing the lid does".  Just set it to "Do Nothing".

@andygev35, if I have the laptop open and choose display to show only on ext monitor it must be the same and you have a bit more air getting through the keyboard. Is the igpu still working if the lid is open although display is to show only on ext?

@itsage

Did you notice any performance difference between the 2020 vs 2018 mbp in terms of gpu performance? What could l do wrong?

The 4 port 2020 MBP has dedicated intake vents on either side of the bottom case, so I can only imagine that any air passing through the keyboard wouldn't make much of a difference, if any.

I'd imagine that since the iGPU is still showing enabled in device manager means that it's still taking up resources and is active.

I'm happy as I'm up and running with win 1903 and PCI root ports 1-3 disabled. But I am curious why the pci.sys switch did not work for me on the new 2004 windows.

After disabling windows updates, disabling hibernation (to mount NTFS RW), and replacing pci.sys with version from 1903 I could not boot windows anymore. Did anybody else experience a similar problem with pci.sys replacement? I was on 2004 insider program DEV, not the standard 2004 release. Maybe that was the problem? I did not have the energy to try with the normal 2004 release as well.

@cbroeg, its probably why windows changed it back to the newer version it happened to me last night. As I was ready to also go for the 1903 version I figured out to check the pci.sys file and I realized that it was changed back. I changed to credentials of the pcisys by removing trustedinstaller as owner and putting my self instead and boom it worked the first time. With 2004 actually both screens internal and external both working see above previous posts . I have left the 3 pci ports disabled for the time being.

My only issue now is that performance is about 15% lower on heaven than with my 2018 mbp 13 . Not sure if I need to fine-tune some windows settings.

@tsakal, very interesting. For me I am sure that it was not replaced:

  • If I do not turn of windows updates before replacing pci.sys Windows boots fine (but with Error 12) and the pci.sys is replaced by the 504 kB one
  • If I turn off windows updates and replace pci.sys I cannot boot into windows any more. It always wants to repair windows "insert cdrom..."

I replaced it by mounting NTFS r/w using winclone and simply dragging the pci.sys in the drivers folder and clicked 'replace'.

I don't know what you are referring to with trustedinstaller? Did you replace the pci.sys in Windows?

@cbroeg, I also tried the mounting solutions but they did not work. Within windows I went in to the folder and manually changed the credentials on the existing prisys file so I can change it as well as removing trustedinstaller and system. I believe this was the issue with mine and it worked immediately. When I used mounty it would boot the first time and when I rebooted it would replace it.
