Hallo @ all,

English ain’t my first language and I got my system on German. But I hope I can provide some information.

My Setup:

2020 MacBook Pro 13“

1.4GHz Quad-Core Processor with Turbo Boost up to 3.9GHz

512GB Storage

Touch Bar and Touch ID

1.4GHz quad-core 8th-generation Intel Core i5 processor

Turbo Boost up to 3.9GHz

Intel Iris Plus Graphics 645

16GB 2133MHz LPDDR3 memory

Magic Keyboard

Touch Bar and Touch ID

Two Thunderbolt 3 ports

Razer Core X Chroma

Razer Cable

AMD RX5700

MacOS

Plug in and Have Fun. Never a problem.

Windows 10

 I tried following things:

A. Windows 10 1903 18362.30

 1. Installing Windows thru bootcamp

2. Disabling Windows Updates

3. Installing Bootcamp PKG

3. Disabling Camera and second express port in device manager (I got three ports and might have disabled the wrong one here) (Second one also disables wifi for me)

4. Running DDU in Safemode

5. Restart Windows

6. Connecting eGPU to first port

7. Bluescreen - Windows not starting

B. Windows 10 1903 18362.30

1. Installing Windows thru bootcamp

2. Disabling Windows Updates

3. Installing Bootcamp PKG

3. Disabling Camera and one first express port in device manager

4. Running DDU in Safemode

5. Restart Windows

6. Connecting eGPU to second port

7. Bluescreen - Windows not starting

C. Windows 10 1903 18362.30

1. Installing Windows thru bootcamp

2. Disabling Windows Updates

3. Installing Bootcamp PKG

3. Disabling Camera and network port device manager

4. Running DDU in Safemode

5. Restart Windows

6. Connecting eGPU to second port

7. eGPU visable, but not as RX5700

8. Installed bootcamp drivers, didn’t help.

9. Run DDU again

10. Installed original AMD Drivers

11. Windows and Adrenalin and Windows seem to acknowledged gpu

12: Crash when starting Adrenalin

13. Restart cold plug didn’t work, windows isn’t starting

14: hot plugging doesn’t work anymore. No graphic card detected

D. Windows 10 1903 18362.30

1. Installing Windows thru bootcamp

2. Disabling Windows Updates

3. Installing Bootcamp PKG

4. Disabling Camera and network port device manager

5. Running DDU in Safemode

6. Disabling the internal gpu in device manager

7. Restart Windows

8. Connecting eGPU to second port

9. eGPU visable, but not as RX5700

10. Installed original AMD Drivers

11. Code 43

12: run DDU

13. Installed bootcamp drivers

14. Code 31

15. Run DDU Again, this time not in safe mode

16. Installed original AMD Drivers

17. Adrenalin and Windows seem to acknowledge the GPU. First time GPU Fans start spinning, But the mouse cursor flickers wild and the CPU runs at 100% all the time

18. Restart -> flickering windows logo

19. Restart without egpu -> code 43 again, no drivers detected

Tried the same with windows Fast Lane and don't see any difference, except that the blue screen is green now.

In a nutshell:

• Cold-Plug egpu -> windows not starting

• Hot Plug without disabling network port -> blue screen

• Hotplug with network port and camera disabled -> error 43 or error 31

• Running DDU a second time and installing AMD drivers  sometimes acknowledges GPU, but mouse cursor flickering and CPU 100%

• I never ever run into error 12, since hot plugging always results in a blue screen.

@james_bland, I am glad to hear your Lenovo Graphics Dock 3 works, that gives me a lot of hope!

When you have some time would you mind reporting back on some of the drivers versions from Device Manager?

Specifically I am curious what version of Nvidia drivers were automatically installed for the GTX 1050.

@jonodavis, Absolutely.

I’ve spent most of the day setting up the Mac, downloading all my date, letting Timemachine and Spotlight do its thing, sitting my Parallels work VM, etc.

I trashed Boot Camp as obviously I need to give it some more space. I’ll do that tomorrow and reload it to see if I can reproduce it. Sod’s law I’ll never get it working again but we shall see.

The drivers I believe would have been very old ones that came with the Lenovo dock I suspect. I always had issues updating the drivers on it on past laptops. Those drivers give me a solid 60fps on DOTA 2 where as newer drivers would be far more all over the place. I suspect they did something to them to make it work nicely with the Ethernet, USB hub, audio controller that are also in it but don’t really know.

What I really want though is one of you to get this working with an AMD GPU. I fancy getting a Core X and a 5700 XT so I can use it in Mac OS as well. One GPU and setup to rule them all. I’ll still use my Windows laptop on occasions and having something that will work on them both would be ideal. That one will be less likely to drive a couple of 4k monitors nicely with its iGPU as it’s an older one.

@jonodavis, When I did it on my 2019, I installed Windows while plugged into the eGPU the entire time, and just installed regular Radeon drivers and had no problems.

@andygev35 I tried version 1909 18362.30 initially with Error 12, and then the latest Inside Fast build, don't remember the build number - also with Error 12.

Maybe worth noting that I haven't had any crashes/BSOS/no-boots etc. Everything is working perfectly - bar anything eGPU related

@fabianring, disable your network devices before you hotplug. That is the cause of the blue screen.

let us know if you can proceed. After this step, most of us are stuck with code 12.

@fabianring "Blue screen" means nothing without any information about the error. It needs to check what is the problem in the dump file. I think that @ivan_loo may be right.

@jefniro, If my assumption is correct, those weird blue screen without the typical BSOD of windows means the iGPU has issue. My 2020 MacBook Pro 13 inch have shown similar blue screen when I have manually disable the iGPU in device manager.

The next time you see it you can press the windows key on keyboard, you will notice the screen changes slightly as there computer is still running and popping up windows start menu.

Hey guys, late at night I found a way to make my setup work.

For the most parts I followed the guide of @andygev35 for his 2020 MacbookAir
I downloaded a German version of windows tho and disabled updated differently. Used the newer DDU software and I guess different AMD Drivers, but its mostly the same. So a huge shoutout to him Smile

But it also comes with some downsides:

• Windows 18362.30
• No wifi connection (I get Lan thru the core x chroma tho)
• Windows won’t boot with egpu attached

Here are the steps that finally worked for me:

1. Disconnect eGPU

2. Use Bootcamp assistant to install Windows 10 1903 V1 without network connection

3. Run bootcamp PKG

4. Disabled camera and only the wifi controller in device manager

5. Blocked windows updates

6. reboot

7. Connected to wifi and downloaded newest DDU and bootcampdrivers for my graphic card

8. Rebooted in safe mode

9. Run ddu and removed nvida and amd drivers (make sure you crossed that windows is not allowed to download software)

10. Reboot and plug in the egpu to the „second“ port. The one closer to yourself. The first one (top one) always caused errors and blue screens

11. Installed bootcamp drivers

12. Turn of the computer completely

13. remove eGPU

14. Reboot and hotplug egpu when windows is loaded

15. It works

Attached at the Razer Core X Chroma:

• USB C (from my Mac)
• Display Port to 28" Samsung Screen
• Lan Cable
• Mouse
• Headset
• HDD for Games

Maybe this helps any of you guys.

Do any of you know how can I fix the problem with loading windows with eGPU attached? I guess installing the EFI Launcher on the HDD might work, doesn't it?

@fabianring, at least there’s some glimmer of hope here for those with the base model.  Now we need someone to break through with the 4 TB3 model.  Glad you got it working for you.

@andygev35 Thanks a lot for your help.

I hope somebody can take my learnings and take it any further in the future.

Does anybody use an EFI Launcher for the newest models and could provide me with some feedback? I am really stuck and might be lost in translation, but I can't figure out how to get it done =(
