Blank partition screen when trying to use bootcamp with egpu on Big Sur
Okay, I probably shouldn’t have downloaded Big Sur. That was my bad and I'm downloading a previous backup from Backblaze right now.
But has anyone had issues trying to get their egpu to work using Bootcamp on a system after downloading OS 11.1? I got it working on the Mac partition using the most recent version of Purge Wranger and if I restart the Mac normally and have it automatically go to the OS my monitor kick-ins no problem.
BUT when I plug in the egpu and try and select the Bootcamp partition by hitting cntrl-r I just get a blank screen. The Razer acts like it’s activated, but I just get a black screen.
If I restart with the egpu not plugged in, I can select the Window partition no problem. But when in the Windows partition it doesn't recognize the egpu. It'll make a noise when I plug it in, but it doesn't switch over to the egpu.
This all worked before stupid Big Sur. Any help will be greatly appreciated!!!

@lucasjackson87, How did you set up the eGPU in Boot Camp? Did you use an EFI boot loader?
@itsage, I did set it up originally with an EFI boot and that partition is still there, but under Catalina I actually didn't have to use the EFI boot, I could just go to the Bootcamp partition and the epgu would just rev up and work on Windows no problem. Think that might be an issue now with Big Sur?
@lucasjackson87, I would say to go through the setup up of the EFI loader again and see if that helps. I know on my Macs, the EFI loader gets "unblessed" following every macOS system update.
@itsage, Ahhhh okay okay, I'll do that process of the EFI loader and see if that does anything. Appreciate the help!!
Do you happen to have a favorite resource to setup the EFI loader again when it gets "unblessed"?
So I deleted and recreated the EFI partition and installed a new version of apple_set_os.efi, putting it in the correct folders (I think). But now when I restart the mac and hold option, the EFI partition doesn't even show as an option to select...
Did I do something wrong?
So it looks like MS-DOS (FAT) isn't even an option when creating a partition...
I have a MacBook Pro 15 Mid 2014 with an Akitio Thunder 2 + RX 5700 XT and when it worked flawlessly under Catalina, upgraded to Big Sur broke my eGPU configuration under Bootcamp. (But work has expected with Purge-wrangler on MacOS)
I suspect the update to .429 BOOT ROM EFI accompanying Big Sur is the fault.
I've never been able to use the apple_set_os to keep the iGPU enabled, always ended in a black screen at startup when choosing the EFI Boot option when holding "Alt" at startup and choosing the formatted USB key on FAT/MBR with this structure; /EFI/Boot/bootx64.efi (renamed apple_set_os.efi)
I've tried several things I've found here but finally ended giving up on the EFI Loader road keeping iGPU enabled on Bootcamp with eGPU connected.
After a lot of errances I've been unsuccessful to output anything on the internal screen but I was able to display on an external screen connected in HDMI to the RX 5700 XT.
1. Installed Bootcamp - Windows 10 20H1 (without replacing PCI.SYS or anything...)
2. DDU multiple times AMD/Nvidia/Intel then reboot
3. Activate Remote Desktop Feature and setup a fixed/manual ipv4 address
4. Use HackFlags 0x600 and the DSDT trick (Intel version) - (Without these I've been unable to access my Bootcamp trough Microsoft Remote Desktop App, don't know why since I can't see shit past the boot on it with eGPU connected)
5. Reboot with holding Alt key
6. Connect the eGPU and boot on your bootcamp partition
7. The screen will turn black, use your smartphone to access your computer trough Microsoft Remote Desktop and install trough it the Adrenalin Drivers found on Bootcampdrivers.
8. After a reboot hopefully it will output on the external screen... But don't rejoice too soon, expect random failure after few minutes, starting with a graphical glitch ending with a grey/black screen... I'm stuck at this point.
In this state, I strongly advise anyone using a Thunderbolt 2 MacBook Pro to not upgrade to Big Sur if you use your eGPU with Bootcamp. STAY ON CATALINA, DON'T LET IT UPDATE YOUR BOOT ROM EFI FIRMWARE TO 429.
@lucasjackson87, If you're already under Big Sur sadly it's useless to downgrade to Catalina since your Boot Rom EFI has been upgraded. I already tried to revert back to Catalina and the issue is still the same, sorry =s
I'm still fiddling with it and I feel I'm close :p
@durandal09, ahh shit! Okay, well if you find a solution please let me know. I'm not a tech expert but I would love to give it a shot.
I did set my MacBook to factory settings and re-download Catalina and re-installed purge-wrangler (no bootcamp yet). But now when restarting I hear the mac chime and the Razer Core kicks up, but then there is just an illuminated black screen and no login.
If I wait until I get to the login screen or login to the Mac partition and then plug in the egpu, it works fine. So I still can't hold option and access other partitions on my Mac with the egpu plugged in, so kinda the same issue as above.
Do you think this is because I downloaded Big Sur originally?
