Boot Camp eGPU Setup Guide - Windows Gaming with Macs
Great tutorial, Utah I kinda stuck on step 2. I don’t understand how to do the EFL stuff. Can you help me with it, pls.
I followed all the step, and I got stuck on the least step, I am not enable to solve the error 12. My laptop is MBP 15 late 2016 by using egpu AMD Radeon vll and I tried disable PCie x16 and PCie x8 as well. And the yellow icon is still there. Can anyone have a solution for this? Appreciate.
Or do I have to do the same routine as for a Mac Book Pro described in this report?
… EFI seems like it is no longer needed. However I have lost video in my eGPU when choosing OS to load.. have to plug back into my iGPU.. This wasn't like this on 10.15.1
After freaking out repeatedly...
Boot to Win by going to Mac > Settings > Startup Disk
Boot back to Windows by HDMI to eGPU, then Alt to choose Start up Disk....
Kind of a pain, but free'd up a USB port.

hello,I l learn a lot of thing from your post, thanks very much, Now, I have some throuble,My build: MBP 2018 13inch, Razer Core X +5700XT, Bootcamp Win10 1903 18362.295 ,I have tried all kinds of solutions to fix error 12 (disable right TB3、left TB3、use oficial drivers、BCD drivers...) ， Failed。should I need DSDT.aml file and put it on the EGPU EFI ? I'm not sure, I didn't do this. how can I Know whether my MBP has “Large Memory”?
If you install Windows 10 1809 it's actually a piece of cake. Anything newer gets trickier and personally I don't think it is worth the extra effort.
AMD Adrenalin 19.12.1 drivers work best, for now. Avoid 19.12.3, it's still too buggy with lots of users reporting black screens after a few mins of gaming.
Mac mini 2018, i7 3.2GHz 6c, 32GB RAM, 1TB SSD, 10GbE, Sonnet eGFX 350W (Noctua NF-A12x25 ULN) + PowerColor RX 5700 XT 8GB, TEKQ Rapide TB3 1TB SSD, macOS Catalina, Win10 Pro
Mac Pro 2010, X5690 3.46GHz 6c, 64GB RAM, Samsung SM951 512GB, Sapphire Pulse RX 580 8GB, Intel X540-T1 10GbE, Allegro Pro USB 3.0, AC/BT 4.2, macOS Mojave
im also trying out an egpu with my 2019 MacBook pro 13" (2 TB3 port model). I was using a Razer Core X and RX580 and it shows in the device manager but I get the error 12. I hoped that it would be easier since the guide mentioned that setting up the egpu on models with iGPU and 2 TB3 should be with less problems. I'm checking and im at windows build 1909. Will downgrading the build help? or which of the devices on the device manager are safe to disable for me to fix error 12?
sorry for a lot of questions. I hope someone can help mee or maybe have the same setup combination.
Hi, I would just like to ask where I can find an ISO file of the 1903 version of windows? whenever I visit the page in for downloading the ISO on microsoft's website, I can only see the nov2019 update (w/c turns out to be the 1909). I downloaded the .msu package linked on this guide (1903 OS Build 18362.295) but it doesn't work since what im installing is 1909 already i think.
Please help me. thanks!
I have one monitor plugged in via USB-C to display port. I have another monitor plugged in via the egpu.
I have Windows 10 1809 fully upgraded installed via boot camp. When I plug the egpu with windows already booted up it doesn’t recognize the card (only Microsoft Basic Display Adapter) and gives error 31.
When I shut the computer down and start windows cold with the egpu plugged in and on, on the igpu monitor the loading wheel starts (where you hit option to go to boot camp) then the windows logo flashes (literally) then the monitor cuts off. Nothing after that. The video card spools like its going under load, then stops blowing so much. That’s all I get.
Not sure where to go from here in boot camp. Don’t get me started on how crappy 10.15.2 is. Any advice would be mucho appreciated. Thanks.
Hello, I don't really understand this article.
Can you give me the complete instructions for my
My current issue is:
1. Met error 12, don't know what to do, perhaps a
video tutorial can help?
2. Delete and reinstalled Bootcamp, this time when i
plugin my core X, the monitor just blackout, and the
the only way to fix is to reinstall it, reinstalled it server times, any way to fix?
I'm wondering where should I start a thread "all the things about Mac Mini 2018"?
Most of us would use egpu with both windows & macos, so it's shame to scatter things in many threads...
Same... since windows updated automatically.... i lost my playing time 🙁
I have a RX580 working on a late 2018 mac mini in Win10 1903. I attempted to upgrade to 5700 XT and have not yet been able to make it work. The RX580 seems to be working fine on the mini with the PCIe x16 and PCIe x4 Controllers disabled in device manager.
I tend to believe that 1903 is bad news for resource management from what I've experienced and read.
I am using the 19.12.3 drivers from the Adreneline 2020 along with the iGPU Intel 630 installed.
I think my next step is going to be to reinstall Win10 @ 1809 if I can and try the 5700 XT again.
I don't like messing around too much. So no EFI boot loaders no FW updates etc. I have a MBP late 2016 with a dGPU.
Now after many attempts I came up with a very simple way to get the eGPU running in boot camp.
1. Install windows 10.
2. Safeboot into windows 10
3. Use DDU to clean and restart drivers
4. Plug in the eGPU (right side)
5. Repeat steps 2 and 3 to remove the drivers windows automatically did upon eGPU plug in
6. Disable PCI ports corresponding to the left side
7. Install drivers from adrenaline
- Never hot plug. And always shut down then boot when switching between OS.
- the dGPU would run in windows without the eGPU plugged in on the internal monitor. With the eGPU plugged in only the external monitor would work, and you wouldn't have the internal monitors working.
All this was find by me because I don't need extra partitions, or USB drives. Additionally I didn't' have to remember to ran .bat files and such when switching OSs etc. I found this convenient because it was the most efficient robust setup without the mess and having restore points if I forget something.
That said... I hate windows update in windows 10. Even if you disable it it automatically comes on after some time. Back in November 2019 windows made a major update without me realising that would happen. It broke my setup. I redid what I did above to no avail. Boot camp would boot up, and the eGPU would run my external monitor but very slow. After trying to restart a few times what happens now is that the eGPU would go into over drive (max fans and such).
So... anyone have any info and ideas? Or will I simply have to follow one of the guides to get large memory allocation and such since it seems to be a resource issue, though it is puzzling since it was fine before (even after updating the Mac OS it had worked without issue), but that windows update really messed it all up
I have a mac mini 3.2GHz 6 core processor + Razer Core x + AMD RX 5700 Ultra. The error code 12 is driving me nuts. I tried downgrading, despite complication, didn't work for me!! I also can't do the cold plugging as it freezes on the Windows loading screen. I tried hot plugin while loading but didn't work for me. I have literally been in front of my screen for the last 8 hours, trying to figure something out. I think the problem with this solution is it talks about MACs in general and ignore the fact that the differences between macs are big. I hope the author could do posts that are more exclusive to Mac minis, MBP, IMacs etc. Please let us know if someone reached a workable solution for Mac Mini?
I am running the Catalina 10.15.2. People say that the latest Catalina version is the prob. I basically exhausted all the options I saw online, ranging from downgrading Windows Version to re-installation. I wonder if I should wait for the next MacOs update, but I am anxious that it won’t work. I know that the older version of Catalina works fine but I had already installed the latest version before I got the eGPU. Also, as you know, there’s no downgrading in MacOs (well, there is but it doesn’t erase drivers). If you see something around, let me know. I will keep looking!
There is one part I could not understand very clearly. Do I still need to some hacks to use AMD eGPU in BootCamp in case I am okay with a disabled internal screen for 15" 2018 Mac Book Pro?
I'm trying to setup my Sonnet breakaway Puck RX 570 in bootcamp on my 2018 mac mini following the online guide and I'm stuck at the step #3 : "Connect the eGPU to a TB3 port then boot into Windows with automate-eGPU - Boot Selector " I did all the other steps without issue and now when I try to boot with the EGPU connected and selecting the automate-eGPU (on an usb key) holding down the option button and then pressing the Q key and scrowing down to windows and pressing enter, The windows logo appears for few second and then the screen goes all black.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

I can't get the error 12 to go away with my Radeon Vii. I gave up and deleted windows. I'll be curious to know if you ever get it up and working.
I don't know about your graphic card, I'm also running on mojave not catalina, but I've seen theitsage getting a working unit on windows with the radeon rx 570 though
Thanks for the help, but this version doesn't seem to have a boot selection, I tried pressing the Q key just like in the tutorial and nothing happen, it just stay at the default screen with no option to select.
I'm running on windows 10- version 1809, should I tried all again, but with the 1903 version to see if things get better?
OK so I tried using the EFI bootloader on my usb key without the EGPU connected and with it connected. My external graphic show on the bootloader, but again, i'M unable to select any partition to boot. Any key I press on my keyboad do nothing. Anyone has any idea what to do? or with another version of that bootloader to try?
Thanks so much for your detailed guide! This is very helpful. I think my lack of technical expertise is hanging me up a bit, and perhaps the hardware I’m using. On the Mac side it’s working great, but on Windows, no go. I have the new 16” MacBook Pro, with the Razer Core X enclosure and a Radeon VII card. Having the error 12 issues, yet when I go through and disable the other recommended PCI drivers, it still doesn’t seem to work. Can you help me troubleshoot it? Thanks so much!
Well I'm glad to see at least you can boot into windows, on my side I can't even archieve that! 😆
I just decided to remove my usb key and boot straight into windows without external EFI thing. (EGPU disconnected)
Little improvement is that I now manage to install AMD drivers (once I booted into windows and connected via hotplug the EGPU) and my graphic card appeared correctly in device manager, but saddly, with error code 12.
I tried reinstalling and retrying with different windows builds (1803,1903 and 1909) because I couldn't find the correct version mentionned in the tutorial by @itsage. They all, however, gave me error code 12 again. I'm currently on the os version 10.0.18362 Build 18362.
Looks like this is going to be hard!
