nVidia eGPU works great on MacBook Pro 16,1 - almost plug & play experience. I use it for heavy VR gaming with Valve Index. My configuration is MacBook Pro 16 Radeon 5500 8GB + eGPU NVidia 2070 + Breakaway Box 550 + Valve Index. Half-Live Alex runs at 60-70 FPS (without eGPU 20-30 FPS), Space Pirate Trainer at 144 FPS (without eGPU 70-100 FPS)

Issues

For now there is only one large problem - during Windows startup you should turnoff eGPU, if you won’t do that MacBook will freeze just before Windows logo. Trying to find out more about that issue, if it’s possible to start Windows without any additional actions (my  neighbors sometimes play VR and that could start Windows without unplugging eGPU).

Also it’s impossible to manually control settings from NVidia Control Panel, NVidia do not see Valve Index as an external display (I’ve connected Index handset DisplayPost directly to eGPU and USB to Mac.

p.s. Now my Radeon 5500M has Apple drivers for now. I’ve tested bootcampdrivers.com driver before eGPU installation, because SteamVR is very laggy with Apple drivers and has not the best FPS. From the other sidebootcampdrivers.com driver cause issues during switching users and logout / login process was time consuming.
