Hi All,

I have spent countless hours trying to get rid of error 12 on my MacBook Pro 16 (late 2019) + Razer Core X + Radeon RX 5700 XT. After 3 days of testing, reinstalling, and failing, I gave up on the whole idea until I hopelessly stumbled upon the comments in this post ( https://egpu.io/forums/bootcamp/macbook-pro-16-windows-egpu-error-12-fix/paged/4/ ). I have tried every single trick I found on this site and even Reddit but nothing worked until I swapped my Razer Core X with Razer Core X Chroma.

I thought I was doing something wrong but apparently everything I was doing is right and should have worked if I had the right eGPU enclosure. The Razer Core X Chroma uses a different Thunderbolt chip and with that, every single trick that did not work with Razer Core X started working with Razer Core X Chroma.

How is this not documented anywhere? This should be a banner on literally every single page. I just wanted to create this post hoping to help somebody else and save them hours and hours of troubleshooting.

EFI method works with Razer Core X Chroma and does not work with Razer Core X.
pci.sys method works with Razer Core X Chroma and does not work with Razer Core X.
Installing Windows 1903 and blocking all future updates works flawlessly with Razer Core X Chroma and does not work with Razer Core X.

I have decided to stick with just installing Windows 1903 and blocking all updates since its the easiest one out of the bunch and everything just works in Mac and Windows right out of the box (after installing drivers in Windows).

Others have mentioned that they lost bluetooth in Windows when they got rid of their error 12 but I did not have any issues with bluetooth as you can see in the screenshots. My keyboard is bluetooth and it was working great.

Awesome set up. It's prob not documented because not enough people have even discovered the discrepancy! The (proper) mods on here only have a handful of enclosures each so are not able to test every one of them, but awesome to see you found this out. I had a similar issue with a Ti82 chip equipped enclosure (The Razer Core V1).

On a Dif note - what's the keyboard? Looks great!

@unknownsolo, Great to see you got the setup going! That super ultrawide monitor is amazing at native resolution and refresh rate. I saw that report and tested with DSL6540 vs JHL6540 controller enclosures. They don't make or break a Boot Camp eGPU setup. This enclosure swap works for some people because Windows essentially goes through initiation for a new Thunderbolt 3 device and resource allocation for the attached PCIe component. EFI boot loader, PCI.sys swap, and Windows OS Build version don't depend on the TB3 controller.

What chip does the Razer Core X Chroma use versus the Razer Core X?  I have a PowerColor Gaming Station enclosure that I've used with my 2019 16" and Windows 1909 with the pci.sys fix without issue.  Since this is not a popular eGPU enclosure, I basically rolled the dice when I found it at Microcenter last November.

I'm curious what chip the Razer's have, and maybe we can start documenting this somewhere.

@brentx, Our buyer's guide lists all the specs including the TB3 controller/s. The PowerColor Gaming Station shares the same TUL mainboard with Mantiz Venus and Sonnet Breakaway box. It has a DSL6540 Thunderbolt 3 controller, same one in the Razer Core X

Thank you! The keyboard is Keychron K2 - awesome keyboard and has both Mac and Windows modes. ( https://www.keychron.com/products/keychron-k2-wireless-mechanical-keyboard )

Thank you, this monitor is awesome! I understand that its a resource allocation or software issue since all the hardware works flawlessly in Mac. That said and for the time being, me and few others keep having these issues with the Core X and switching to the Core X Chroma fixes it so I will take that. Unless you know of a way to make the Core X works the same way Chroma does 😉

@unknownsolo, There are many builds pairing the 2019 16-inch MacBook Pro with AMD Radeon cards and DSL6540 Thunderbolt 3 controller enclosures (Core X included). In my experience, the Windows 10 OS version is the more crucial element than the TB3 controller.

@itsage, Sheesh I looked at that table, I must've just completely blanked on the TB3 Controller column.  Thanks for sharing!

@itsage - I am not disagreeing with you at all. I just wanted to point out the simple swapping out the enclosure fix. I could get the Razer Core X to work only with EFI boot and port dance which was not very ideal. With the Chroma, its literally plug and play experience for me in both Windows and Mac.

Quick update - I guess I am just excited this thing is finally working! - I saw few gaming builds online with lower scores so this is awesome for eGPU!
