Got a new Akitio Node and Galax GTX1070 today, trying to get everything working on an Early 2015 13" MBP Retina with the Apple TB3>TB2 adapter & Apple Thunderbolt cable.

I have Windows 10 & macOS Sierra installed. No problems detecting the GPU in either OS, and was able to install drivers on both. I'm also having the same issue regardless of OS now which effectively makes this thing useless.

My issue is that once I have everything connected & installed, no signal is being output from the GPU. To make things weirder, the fans on the GPU start to spin for a flicker of a second, then stop, but the bright red LEDs remain & my laptop is able to see the device through Device Manager (no error 12 that I can see).

Here's what I've tried:

  • reinstalling drivers completely on both OS; same issue
  • tried new power cable for Akitio; same issue
  • tried new HDMI cable for GPU; same issue
  • tried DVI cable for GPU; same issue
  • tried new monitor; same issue
  • tried getting it working on girlfriend's 2014 MBP Retina; same issue
  • fiddled with the TB3 adapter/TB cable a million times, trying all different ports; same issue
  • reconnected the GPU about 100 times; same issue
  • reconnected the GPU 6+8 pin cables & swapped them around; same issue
  • tried the -a method; same issue

I'm starting to think that the GTX 1070 might be faulty in some way. But it is being detected in Windows & macOS, so that's kinda weird. GPU-Z shows a bunch of missing info though, and System Profiler in macOS says No Kext Installed and doesn't mention the model or anything there. automate-eGPU detected it was a 1070, however.

I'm out of ideas - please someone help! Driving me bonkers.

Hi Nelz, I have pretty much the same issue (i suppose..) please check  https://egpu.io/forums/mac-setup/akitio-thunder2-gtx1050ti-4gb-16gbps-mbpr-late-2013-13/#post-14821

I suggest you also to insert same printscreens as I did.

Give this approach a chance:  https://egpu.io/forums/mac-setup/imac-egpu-simply-for-3d-accelleration/paged/1/

I didn't have time to try it myself yet, but will asap.

Let me know if it solved your issue.

Gave that a go and I am able to boot into OSX with little issue now. Only problem is booting Windows. From reading up on the forum, it seems like it's timing based, and I can confirm it does work 1 in 5 times when I connect the TB cable to the MBP as soon as the Windows logo shows, but before the loading spinner starts.

Has anybody got any better, more reliable ways to boot into Windows? I got into this thinking I would be able to hotplug, and this is super frustrating and more than a few steps back. Surely there's a way around this..

Thanks in advance to anyone who can assist.
