We don't need ports where we are going: Gaming on a mining card, inspired by the constant "what's the cheapest egpu set up I can get" question.

Intro:

I have seen a lot of budget conscious posts, folks see the price of an enclosure plus a card and get a bit scared about the investment, totally understandable, and if size isn't an issue you could get a PC for very little more (I am meaning to do a post about that as I don't believe thats entirely accurate, but thats for another time...) so thought I'd try and find a way to save some money...

Also, not going to lie, I've been going a little crackers during this lockdown, sitting in the same corner of the same room working about twice as hard as I used to in the office (I work for a large retailer in the UK) so I've been setting myself little projects to keep me occupied and to try and prevent my brain turning to (even more) mush.

Goal:

Small, cheap egpu. Mantiz being used for test purposes.

References and Sources:

I stumbled across this video...

which piqued my interest as being a first gen Ultrafine 5K owner I never actually connect my monitor to my egpu so what do I need these fancy port things for anyway?

I've always had soft spot for Zotac cards so bought one of these via Ebay for the price of a couple of pizzas, I'd prefer the pizza's but since I also bought a pizza oven for my garden I'm saving that money anyway, so this works out pretty much free, right?

It took a week or tow to arrive but arrive it did, and I am now the proud owner of a very grubby pseudo GTX 1060 for the grand total of approx 30 quid.

Faux GTX 1060 in all its grubby glory.

Following the instructions in the video it quickly dawned on me I don't have the random modified drivers they are using and Google sends me down various rabbit holes mostly ending on a site in Chineese with a "download" link behind a paywall.

Further digging lands me on the LTT forum (should have gone there first really) and 13 pages later I'm reading work arounds for the normal drivers (but older versions).

The final method:

There are a few methods and it took a combo of a couple to get it to work but I did finally get hybrid mode working. Instructions as follows.

  • Registry edit of standard drivers as per
  • Disable and enable the GPU without shutting down/restarting.

And, boom, my 30 quid GTX 1060 is up and running*.

The plan for this was to get it up and working and then take the shroud off and cram it into a Thunder 3 but the performance is nowhere near what a 1060 card should be and not what has been reported in the video and from other folks who have done similar in PC's so not entirely sure whats going on.

*I have had to do the usual steps for this MacBook and Nvidia - I've disabled SIP, allowed boot from external media, and created a USB EFI Bootloader as per the link in the main nav which is plugged into the Mantiz Venus using the latest version of windows (2004). I select W10 and ignore the "no eGPU detected" message because I am not sure its ever detected a single eGPU I have used, ever, but worked every time.

I should learn how to screenshot in Windows

Looks like an oven toaster body to me. 😀

To do: Create my signature with system and expected eGPU configuration information to give context to my posts. I have no builds.

@eightarmedpet, This is such a fun combo, mining card + UltraFine! I haven't looked into these cards closely but I wonder if vBIOS flashing is possible. That would make driver installation less of a headache.

@itsage, thats what I thought! Sadly the performance is worse than the iGPU which doesn't add up as others found out close to a regular 1060, not sure I know enough to work out what the issue is.

I'll look into vBIOS flashing, I have a feeling I read somewhere its not possible...

Looks like this card is reported as P106-090 where the card in the LTT video was P106-100. Searching techpowerup shows that the p106-100 is the one that is equivalent to a gtx 1060 where the p106-090 should be closer to a gtx 1050 ti. https://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/p106-090.c2999

@eightarmedpet, Performance should not be worse than Intel iGPU. Have you manually set the app/game to use the eGPU through Windows Graphics Settings?

@itsage, I'm almost offended you had to ask... 😉

Just went back to double check, and yep, all set up correctly. I've ran Valley and it shows its using the eGPU but performance is iGPU level. At a bit of a loss what to try next.

@nu_ninja, good spot, I obviously got carried away and missed a small detail... although following the link you shared this card should still outperform the 1050ti 100% vs 91% and requires a 6 pin power supply which 1050ti's don't which lead me to assume this was a variant of a 1060... but could be wrong?

@eightarmedpet, Had to ask because I make many silly mistakes all the time. One thing I found odd in recent versions of Windows is an uncommonly known "fullscreen optimizations" feature. It's set by each game/app. Windows seems to limit the GPU performance to the highest refresh rate of the connected monitor. In your particular scenario, the eGPU connects to no monitor so Windows is out of ideas on how to optimize. You can access and disable this feature by right-clicking on the executable file for the game/app, then go the Compatibility tab to check the box.
