I’ll be filling this in more as I go along—the build is working out of the box so far, albeit a bit inconsistently

System specs

2011 15" MacBook Pro
macOS 10.13.6 (High Sierra)
CPU: 2.5 GHz Intel Core i7
iGPU: Intel HD Graphics 3000
dGPU: AMD Radeon HD 6770M
16GB RAM, Samsung SSD 850 EVO 250GB, Seagate 1TB Hybrid SSHD

eGPU hardware

+ Mantiz Venus
+ Sapphire Pulse RX580 8GB
+ Apple TB3 to TB2/1 adapter
+ Apple TB2 cable

Hardware pictures

---

Installation steps
+ I used an Apple ThunderBolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2/1 adapter, and an Apple Thunderbolt 2 cable to connect the Mantiz Venus to the TB1 MacBook Pro
+ I ran Mac_editor’s PurgeWrangler script, which worked beautifully the first time
+ Reboot, hot plug, log-out, log-in… and the eGPU was operational in macOS

Benchmarks

GeekBench 4 Compute with dGPU: OpenCL Score 5206  https://browser.geekbench.com/v4/compute/3301677
GeekBench 4 Compute with eGPU: OpenCL Score 102630  https://browser.geekbench.com/v4/compute/3301692

How many displays do you have hooked up to the RX580? What resolutions are they running at? What refresh rates?

I've got an old Macbook Air mid-2013 with thunderbolt 1. Was curious to see if I could breath new life into it with an RX580 I've got. I'll already be setting up an eGPU for my work laptop, which is a Macbook Pro 2018 with thunderbolt 3, but was curious if I could reuse the eGPU with the Macbook air to drive two or three displays, depending on possible resolution/refresh rate.

I'm looking at putting together a similar setup, and wondering how this is working for you.
I think the only difference is that my dGPU went out and has since been disabled.  Any insight into whether or not that will affect a set up like yours?

Hi there,
I have a very similar setup except for a Macbook Pro 13" mid-2012.
Everything's working well most of the time BUT :

  1. I noticed that when on battery, if the MBP put itself in sleep mode, I cannot wake it up. I have to hard reboot.
  2. Using a TB3 adapter, the Mantiz Venus power supply is always on. Meaning that you'll heard the power supply fan.

I don't know if anybody else noticed those behavior with a similar setup?
CheerS
