For those who still have a nMacPro, and needs an update of sorts. no hacks involved just disabing PCI devices in Windows 10 (20H2).

Started off on Mac OS X 10.14 (Mojave) as I was still reluctant to go without my Steam Library's 32bit games. Got myself a cheap Razer Core X for Christmas ($250 AUD after discounts), and decided - what the heck: I'll upgrade! bought a ($800 AUD GPU)...

My reason for updating was primarily gaming: Both on Mac OS and Windows 10.

I'm adding my details here for historical documentation.

System Specs:

2013 MacPro 6,1

3.5GHz Six-Core Intel Xeon E5,

512GB SSD,

128GB RAM,

2x AMD FirePro D700

eGPU Hardware:

Razer Core X

Apple Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter

Apple Thunderbolt Cable (50 cm - short)

XFX Radeon RX 5700 XT THICC III Ultra

eGPU connected to TB2 Port 6 on Mac Pro (Port 5, left my Mac Pro hanging during reboots fyi)

Mac OS Version: 11.1 (Big Sur)

eGPU OS 11.1

Installation Steps

FYI - I generally followed @anotheregpuser build

Mac OS 10.14 (Mojave)

- Followed installation instructions for Purge Wrangler (disable sip etc)

- Run PurgeWrangler without eGPU connected.

- Rebooted and connected eGPU

- Mac OS detects the eGPU (razer core x) ; but has no drivers for the 5700 XT and therefore is unusable. 🙁

Mac OS 11.1 (Big Sur)

- I then created a  OS 11.1 USB Boot Drive - as reading forums, have indicated that I would need to upgrade to Catalina or Big Sur for the 5700 XT to be supported.

- Followed installation instructions for Purge Wrangler (disable sip etc)

- Run PurgeWrangler without eGPU connected.

- Rebooted and connected eGPU and everything worked.

- I connected the HDMI input to my 4k monitor to the eGPU's HDMI out.

- I still have 3 monitors connected to the Mac Pro (D700) directly.

Windows 10 (20H2)

- As @anotheregpuser main point you need to disconnect ALL USB devices prior to booting Windows 10 after disabling PCI devices in Windows 10's Device Manager.

- Highly recommend you use Bluetooth keyboard/mouse combo, just so you can disable PCI devices without connecting additional USB devices. Configure this first before disconnecting all USB devices.

- This is key, I found that if you left your USB devices plugged in (web cam, usb hub, mouse etc): things break, e.g. one of the D700 is not detected in Windows (3 monitors had no output).

1. Start in Bootcamp

2. Download latest bootcampdrivers (blue version)

3. Run DDU in safemode, and ensure Microsoft Basic Display drivers

4. Install Radeon Bootcamp drivers.

Now at this point, the 5700 XT was still not detected by Windows 10, I had to start disabling PCI devices in Device Managment as follows:

Windows 10 PCI Devices Disabled

PCI bus 21, device 0, function 0

PCI Slot 4 (PCI bus 21, device 5, function 0)

PCI Slot 5 (PCI bus 21, device 6, function 0)

PCI bus 17, device 10, function 0

Note that these PCI devices matches @anotheregpuser's list - Note: He too uses a 2013 Mac Pro (Important). When I had USB devices connected they didn't match, so this is critical, if they don't match its risky to disable PCI devices. I had to go through a Windows recovery, because I disabled a PCI device that didn't match any of the above.

If all things worked out, the 5700 XT will be detected, and all you need is to reboot Windows 10, and plug a monitor to the output of the video card (I used HDMI).

Heaven (OS 11.2) - A performance boost?

OS11.1 - CL!ing

eGPU OS 11.1 CL!ing OpenCL
eGPU OS 11.1 CL!ing Metal

 Geekbench 5

eGPU OS 11.1 Geekbench 5 Metal
eGPU OS 11.1 Geekbench 5 OpenCL

Conclusion / Problems

Windows:

1. The work flow requires you to disconnect all USB devices prior to starting up, otherwise - things starts breaking, e.g. Windows hangs on boot.

2. Performance in games is OK for 1080 gaming. 1440 is pushing it, 4k is disappointing. I was previously using a Ryzen 7/1080Ti for comparison before I gave it away, and decided what Bootcamp/eGPU could offer

3. A bit confused at some games in Windows, some games work stellar - best example: Strange Brigade - 4K and greater that 60fps. However some games like XCOM2 and Jurassic Park appears to have no performance advantage. Shadow of the Tombraider also is a bit confusing, as I don't get "Vulkan" support.

Mac OS:

1. The trade off of losing 32 bit compatibility, the need to purchase a new version of VMware Fusion Pro (for VMs) in Big Sur 11.1 is a pill hard to swallow. But I still have my Mojave boot disk.

2. 1080p and sometimes 1440p gaming only.

@mesja_tecrae, Have you tried an older version of Radeon drivers? I've found 20.4.2 to be the best for eGPU mode.

Just wanted to add, that macOS 11.2 is also supported.

eGPU OS 11.2

I did have problems, when I updated 10.14 Mojave Security Update (January) - it made my OS11.2 unbootable - kernel panic.

Solved it by re-installing 11.2 on a separate disk, migrated everything over and re-ran PurgeWrangler

I think the security update, turned on SIP, etc.
