I was also seeing some screen tearing on both (maybe more on external), so I recommend getting a g/free-sync monitor if you go that route. I plan to upgrade mine.

Not sure about the CPU bottlenecking on 3.6 Ghz.

 

@nando4, I was considering that option but I didn't have the right screwdriver (I think it needs some weird pentalobe bit as seen here: ).

I also wasn't sure if the SSD needs its shell as sort of a heat sink. Since it had another 2 years of warranty (and opening it would obviously void that) I flipped it for a good price and got a brand new mSATA SSD which is intended to function without the shell and has fresh warranty and cycles. The worst part about going mSATA is that you have to use some sketchy adapter and the whole hassle with the transfer of your data. All things said, both are valid ways to handle the issue.
