System specs
  • 2016 13” TouchBar Macbook Pro - i7 3.3GHz
  • Intel Iris Graphics 550 1536 MB
  • 16GB Ram
  • 512GB SSD
  • Catalina 10.15.1
  • Windows 10 Pro 1903, w/ update KB4512508
eGPU hardware

Installation steps

macOS

Plug and play, works out of the box. Benchmark below.

Windows

Without going into the details on what didn’t work, this sequence did the trick:

  • Clean install Windows 10 1903 V1 ISO (OS Build 18362.30)
  • Boot into Windows and install bootcamp drivers (should run automatically)
  • Disable Windows updates
  • Install update KB4512508
    • August 13, 2019—KB4512508 (OS Build 18362.295) which can be found Microsoft Update Catalog
    • "2019-08 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1903 for x64-based Systems (KB4512508)"
    • Be careful one is for SERVER, that is not the one that will work with Bootcamp...
  • Prepared EFI USB
    • Simply copy-paste the EFI folder to a FAT32 formatted USB stick
  • Generated DSDT file with this guide
    • After following the steps, I got 4 errors when compiling (option 1 intel method, step iv), where apparently errors were to be expected. Make note of each line on which the error occurs.
    • I downloaded a pre-compiled DSDT override that seemed to match my Macbook (Apple_2016_late-13in-Macbook-Pro-Touchbar_vertice-supplied.zip)
    • Downloaded and installed WinMerge and opened and compared my own generated dsdt-modified.dsl (with 4 errors) with the pre-compiled dsdt-modified.dsl
    • I replaced the error lines in my own dsdt-modified.dsl file with the lines from the pre-compiled dsdt-modified.dsl
    • Compiled my own generated, but edited, dsdt-modified.dsl file once more, and got 0 errors
    • Renamed the resulting .aml file to DSDT.aml and placed it in the EFI USB folder \EFI\CLOVER\ACPI\Windows\
    • Reboot from EFI (press q, then select windows) and check if you have a large memory entry in device manager (see step 3 here)
    • If so, success and move to next steps
  • Boot W10 into safe mode and DDU delete AMD drivers
  • Turn off macbook
  • Connect and turn on eGPU
  • Boot into windows via EFI USB
  • Install AMD drivers directly from their website, reboot (always using EFI USB)
  • Should work!
Benchmarks

Windows 10 (not sure why it states Windows 8?)

Comments
I tried working with a non-clean install of windows with latest updated drivers, but this was giving me error 12 and none of the fixes seemed to work. A clean W10 1903 install with only the KB4512508 update kept the error 12 for me, and the DSDT override seems necessary to get rid of it. In all the mess of trial and error I also tried Bootcampdrivers.com’s drivers (which I think also resulted in error 43 occasionally), and they didn’t allow me to boot CSGO. Installing AMD’s original drivers works fine for me, no errors there.

Hope this helps someone with a similar setup!

@103736254

No this build is W10 Pro (I can confirm also W10 Home works). Not sure about Win to Go.. With the necessary EFI USB boot sequence I doubt that will work.

@timcaffrey, Finally,I tried win10 pro on the inner SSD,I follow your instruction,and  also met some troubles,

  • Clean install Windows 10 1903 V1 ISO (OS Build 18362.30)                                    -done
  • Boot into Windows and install bootcamp drivers (should run automatically)      -done
  • Disable Windows updates                                                                                                 -done
  • Install update KB4512508                                                                                                 -not done(i think it’s not necessary)
  • Prepared EFI USB
    • Simply copy-paste the EFI folder to a FAT32 formatted USB stick               -done
  • Boot W10 into safe mode and DDU delete  AMD drivers                                             - done ( DDU only delete intel drivers,because i have no AMD iGPU)
  • Turn off macbook   -done
  • Connect and turn on eGPU                     -done
  • Boot into windows via EFI USB            - I can go into win10,but,No Egpu detected in the automate-EFI v1.0.5 MENU,and the extenal Display did not work .
  • Install  AMD drivers directly from their website, reboot (always using EFI USB) - i can not install AMD Drivers , it told me that there's no AMD GPU detected(Adrenalin 2020 Edition 19.12.2),this is the drivers link:5700xt Drivers;

thank you for your reply,please help me 😯 😯 ,can i have your whatsapp ID?

@timcaffrey

I have almost an identical build:

https://egpu.io/forums/builds/2016-13-macbook-pro-6th2cu-rx-5700-xt-32gbps-tb3-razer-core-x-chroma-macos-10-15-1/

Interestingly enough, you have quite better UValley benchmark score on Windows (4571 vs 3942).  Most other folks have scores closer to what I have with this kind of build.  I am wondering if that is because you didn't use the ExtremeHD Preset in UValley and used a Custom one or if it is driver/Windows related as I have latest Windows updates installed with all latest drivers.

If its not too much trouble, do you mind running your benchmark with standard ExteremeHD preset?

@karant

This most likely had to do indeed with my custom presets. Running in ExtremeHD gets me 3622, see below screenshot

@timcaffrey Thanks for this guide, because of you I was able to get this up and running quickly on Windows 10 Pro.
