Hi All

long time lurker, first time poster. Thought I would share my mini egpu build experience since this thread has been tremendously helpful.

Heres my final build:

I tried out both the Aorus Gaming box 1070 and the zotac 1060mini in the node lite, but I had issues getting both to work because my laptop has a nvidia dGPU(lenovo P50 with nvidia quadro m1000m). There was a lot of finagling with the drivers to get an eGPU with another nvidia card to work. I even tried using setup 1.x but it was inconsistent as well.

In the end because hot plugging didn't work very well I decided to abandon the project. A few weeks later I came across a used AMD R9 nano for a good deal on ebay, and decided to try again. With the AMD card in the node lite I have no issues connecting and disconnecting my eGPU now as it doesn't muck or compete with the nvidia dGPU anymore.

The AMD R9 nano is tiny. As in really short. Shorter than the Zotac 1060 mini. Plus it has its power connector on the back side rather than the top like most mini gpu cards(the side of the card that faces the front fan of the Akitio Node Lite). Theres enough clearance between the back of the card and the fan for a normal straight PCIe 8pin power connector.

The only thing is that I had to dremel off part of the front bracket of the R9 nano so I had space to pass the power cable out of the Akitio Node Lite, as the R9 nano is 2 PCIe slots wide.

Excellent work! How's your DA-2 keeping up with the R9 Fury Nano? When I tried a similar build, the DA-2 was not enough.

you know to be honest I haven't really stressed the setup that much yet. I primarily was looking for a boost in pro applications like solidworks and adobe premiere, not gaming so much. With large assemblies in Solidworks I have had no issues with the setup. (except that the Dell DA-2 gets really noisy when stressed, like it starts to have an audible clicking noise like the sound of a mechanical relay). This is of course with stock settings with the R9 nano and no overclocking

That doesn't sound good...... Not sure the DA-2 is ever meant to make noise!
