(crappy cell phone video screengrab because I haven't taken a proper pic of the setup yet)

Figured I'd post a separate topic for this since it's technically a completely different enclosure.

I now have the opportunity at work to utilize an ASUS XG Station 2 with my MacBook Pro and it works so well that I simply don't have to go into much detail.

Hardware

Software

  • macOS High Sierra 10.13.4 Beta

Setup Procedure

Plug the TB3 cable into the eGPU. Plug it into the laptop. Done.

macOS auto-detects the eGPU with no problems and the external display becomes available. eGPU gets utilized in pro apps just fine. Doesn't matter what state the laptop is in: closed, open, or turned off.

The XG Station 2 also outputs 100w of Power Delivery via the TB3 cable so it charges the MBP just fine, even under high load scenarios.

The USB Ports and Gigabit Ethernet on the dock itself are dual-mode; they can share the TB3 cable's bandwidth OR you can use them with an included USB-B -> USB-A cable to plug into your laptop (or dongle, in the MBP's case) so that the TB3 bandwidth is unaffected by USB traffic.

If it weren't so ugly and expensive (and if the PSU fan wasn't loud), it'd be the perfect eGPU chassis.

@p-mac That's a sweet setup. Which particular model is your RX Vega 64? If it's the reference cooler card, I'd highly recommend checking the operating temp.

Did you manage to get this working under Windows?

Haven't tried this specific setup in Windows just yet, but I know my Thunder2-based solution works with the regedit / Test Mode tweak.

Confirmed now, this setup works under windows using the same regedit tweak as my TB2 box.

@p-mac
Hi, really curious if your TB2 enclosure is still working with TB3 MacBook Pro under newest MacOS 10.13.4?
Thank you! = )

Hi all,

I'm attempting a build but hit a roadblock.

I have ROG enclosure above, 10.13.4 and a gigabyte Vega 64 going to a LG 31.5 4k monitor.  However not having much luck.

'plug and play' is not working, however thunderbolt registers ROG enclosure.

Amy advise welcome

Finally got it too work.

Long story short :

  1. install windows
  2. update thunderbolt drivers
  3. update station firmware to v25
  4. display port male to male cable
  5. plug and play 10.13.4

However now the fan on the Vega doesn't seem to go - works under bootcamp however.

Geting 150k geekbench.
