2016 12" Dell XPS 12 9250 [6th,2C,Y] + R9 285 @ 16Gbps-TB3 (AORUS Gaming Box) + Win10 [itsage] // Win10 on external SSD
I’ve been looking for an ITX AMD card to try with the Gigabyte AORUS Gaming Box. The local Micro Center has a Sapphire R9 285 Compact that was on clearance. It fits this tiny enclosure perfectly and uses an 8-pin PCIe power plug just like the GTX 1070 that came with this eGPU enclosure. A simple swap was all it took to get this going. AMD XConnect was plug-and-play.
Of course it’s much worse in terms of performance compared to the GTX 1070. What I’m excited to see is an AMD option for the AORUS Gaming Box from Gigabyte. Hopefully, it’s going to be the AORUS RX Vega Nano Gaming Box for the same $599 price point.
The XPS 12 has magnets along the display bezels and they are strong enough to hold the screen vertically attached to the edge of the AORUS Gaming Box. I would imagine a portable wireless VR would be something like this setup in the near future.
I love this so very much. +1 for mini-ITX-sized enclosures!
