System specs
2017 13inch Macbook Pro, MSI RX 560, Akitio Node Lite (unmodded).

eGPU hardware
I have loved the Akitio Thunder 2/3's for years and have been boring the pants of folks with "why is there not a high end mini eGPU solution for equally as long. The Node Lite is a beautiful piece of kit which matches the space grey Macbooks perfectly and when I found one on eBay for cheap I couldnt resist grabbing it, despite having no real need/use for it (although it did work for a proof of concept for housing a TB3 add in card to power my LG Ultrafine 5K directly).
As much as I like my usual set up (in sig) I liked the idea of a more casual gaming expereince on the couch so with some spare Amazon vouchers I was lucky enough to have I grabbed an RX 560 and popped it in the Node Lite.

Hardware pictures
The Node Lite is in the built in cupboard (which I still need to paint) with only the TB3 cable poking out from a specially made cable slot at the back.

Installation steps

macOS: Worked plug and play obviously.
W10: Forget the build I was on but also worked, until it corrupted the whole partition

I used rEFINd to get things working in W10, instructions and resources are elsewhere but will link my up latest custom load screen later.

Benchmarks

Mad Max plays like crap on macOS, 30 fps. Boarderlands felt smooth. GTA SA is no longer available on the Mac store which is annoying, will add real life gaming benchmarks as I test things out.

Gaming results:

This is my macSO library, willl be updating this as I test with findings - remember the goal here is smooth couch gaming, no less than 45fps really and Xbox one X controller via bluetooth (now natively supported).

7 Days to die -
Ark: Survival evolved -
Bioshock Remasatered -
Bioshock 2 -
Bioshock infinite -
Company of Heros 2 -
C0unter-Strike: Global offensive -
Cuphead - Plays fine with iGPU (60fps)
Dead Island -
Dying Light - Sub 30fps
Left 4 Dead 2 -
Mad max - Controller is perfect, FPS is 30 with drops
Mafie III -
Metro 2033 Redux - Issues with both Xbox One X and PS4 controllers
Metro Last night Redux - Issues with both Xbox One X and PS4 controllers
Mount & Blade Warband -
Portal -
Road Redemption - Controller buttons dont work in non big picture, bugged in big picture, when you join game as a single player it thinks 2 players have hit join, what a piece of crap. Also closes steam on exit as do the Metro games.
Rocket League -
Spec Ops: The Line - Controller not recognised at all?!
Tomb Raider 2013 - Plays decently, 45fps + Xbox One X controller works perfectly.

New WIP table:
https://www.notion.so/eightarmedpet/7460661cce3e4cc3b98fd2e24abe35f2?v=b97d67731f95457aa21d6d2f0deea233

Comments (eg: Somehow this set up corrupted my Windows partition to the extent I had to nuke it and start again, kinda frustrating. rEFInd is also currentlyy not getting round Error 12 for me (well, eGPU is not being detected when connected at boot) but the woinderful EFI Bootloader is working when I hotplug.

I'm going to stick to macOS gaming to try and keep things simpler while I wait for Navi.

Looking forward to seeing the end results. I make a habit of storing all Steam/Uplay games on an external drive. That way it's quick to switch from using with one computer to another. Also applicable for scenarios Boot Camp volume needs a full reset.

@itsage cheers! My plan is to keep games on local storage actually to minimise peripheral replugging, although I may try an external on the second tb3 port on the Node Lite

Game wise l plan on playing casual and light games, Cuphead, maybe Metro, Road Redemption and the like. Also looking at Metal supported games for best performance- might get tomb raider after giving you stick for still testing what I called an old game!

Hahaha no worries. I use those old games because they have macOS version. Is the custom-framed TV going on top of fireplace next?

@itsage its not actually a custom frame! Its a standard (ish) Samsung model - The Serif. I like its legs too much to mount it on a shelf (although they do look great and I did have it on a cabinet in my last place).

Next move is to rewire a plug socket into the cabinet to get rid of some more wires. I hate wires.

Going to hunt out some Metal games too....

@eightarmedpet, What a great build! I love the idea of pairing the AkiTio Lite with a 75W GPU!

For your Info:  I have installed most games on a NAS (Synology) and can start them from there. They may need a little more time to load, but TerraBytes of data provided and due to Raid 5, it's quite safe.

For the games: Before discovering eGPU I had all games in Wine-Bottles only for MacOSX, never bothered with Windows. Unfortunately, now, when I have the GPU Power, this is not very interesting anymore ./

@oliverb cheers! Its a little lack lustre... but I found I had GTA SA in my Apps somehow so going to give it a go.
Fortnite crashed the whole set up, as did Dying light - Possible power spikes? Also downloading the Metro games to test.

Games tested so far.

Fortnite: Crash (binned off, can't be dealing with that plus the 40GB size of the game!)
Dying Light: 20fps (unplayable)
RocketLeague: 50fps(which is actually pretty bad considering how light the game is)

@eightarmedpet Your numbers are really not convincing. Perhaps you change the resolution and settings?1 Perhaps 1920x1080p Medium Details? A RX560 is supposed to be able to handle this...

@oliverb do you mean convincing as in you think they may be wrong or as in they are not very good.
I used a resolution control app for the TV to make sure it was running at 1080 @1x and tweaked settings so they were low/medium.

I'm expecting this to perform around the same as a 15inch with 560/560x as while the desktop 560 is stronger its TB3 and my CPU is quad core so should even out (could be wrong?).

anyone know how do I prevent the imgs from being so small in post?

@eightarmedpet The FPS are not very high.

I would expect a similar performance like a Pro 560X dGPU, even a little better. I am working now, but if you want we can do later some comparing, because I have a Pro 560X. Perhapse I post some benchies here, which I already have.

@oliverb that would be great actually, please do post them here, I think it will be a great opportunity for a side by side comparison.
With Steam's return period I/we can grab any games the others have just to test and just refund them if need be.

I had Activity monitor open all the time and the 560 was defo being used.

Let me grab Tomb Raider (prob at the weekend) and test... (thats using your 560 right?).

@eightarmedpet... Yes I was using my 560X in Windows for those tests. I can't do new bechmarks now, because I have to work (using MacOSX). but I have some older benchmarks for

Metro Exodus, World of Tanks, Resident Evil 6, Return of the Tomb Raider, Shadow of the TombRaider, Borderlands2 (Mac), Civilization VI, Far Cry 5, Far Cry Primal, Unigin Heaven and Superposition.

Tell me which you want me to post.

I know, MacOSX underperforms-  it's a shame.

I can post already made MacOSX benchmark for Borderlands 2, Portal, Bioshock Infinite and Valley/Heaven.

Are you able to test in 1080?

Yes, in a couple of hours. MaxDetails 1080p for Borderlands 2, right?
Bioshock Inifinte goes only 1600x900 as far as I remember, so this will the resolution for it.

@oliverb cheers for those! I got Borderlands running nicely at 60fps on decent settings, but having odd issues with my PS4 controller in Metro/Steam, might not be the best place to ask but anyone else using a PS4 controller successfully? When I check the tickbox for PS4 support it loses BT connection.

@oliverb hows that with macOS? I'm reading there are issues with PS4 controllers and Steam in macOS... ffs... I dont realllllly want to buy another controller.

I cannot tell as I am using it very rarely and only in Windows. I guess this could be difficult as this is a Microsoft product. When I find the time I try to run it with MacOSX.

Going to try and run some benchmarks this weekend. In the meantime I thought I’d share what I’ve learned reg controllers in macOS and Steam.

Wireless:
ps4 pairs easily and is technically supported by steam but when said support is enabled the controller actually gets disconnected! Wired would be fine but not over BT. Due to this steam shows incorrect button prompts on screen and there is sometimes odd behaviour in certain games (Metro is the worst - I’m constantly staring at the ceiling).

Xbox controllers use a proprietary WiFi protocol so can not be connect at all.

However...

The latest revision Xbox one X controllers have both WiFi and BT the later of which pairs pretty easily (had some issues I’m trying to work out). Is recognised and works correctly in games (tried Mad Max and Tomb Raider) but once again Metro is proving problematic- might just be that specific game.

I bought a grey grey controller to match the MacBook but it doesn’t really so might grab a white one to match the TV instead.

Couch gaming on on a MacBook is actually great. Going to see where the GPU world ends up this autumn to see if AMD can come up with a competitive 75W card, if not I may switch back to Nvidia with a 1650ti and a 2070 (I love the founders edition design).

Not as scientific as others but I’m adding gaming experiences in the original post. Mixed success so far, I don’t want to have to revert to a steam controller...

Left 4 Dead shouldn't be a problem. It's a very optimized game from Valve, those make hundreds of FPS in any newer card.

Aye, there are some games on that list that will run on iGPU but there is still the question around controller support (I suspect L4D2 will be fine) as I want a seamless couch gaming experience.
