Update
I've sold the RTX 3080 as the performance gain at FHD was not justifying the cost. Would be worth considering if running on a UHD monitor. Selling at the price I paid while prices are still high is the best scenario right now in my eyes. More details
System specs
- 15.6" Acer Predator Triton PT715-51-732Q (FHD display)
- 32 GB DDR4
- Intel i7-7700HQ
- GeForce GTX 1080 8Gb MAX-Q dGPU
- Windows 10 Home
eGPU hardware
- Razer Core X Chroma
- Gigabyte GeForce RTX 3080 Eagle OC
Comments
- I spent hours trying to get this running, I only had luck once I output the display to an external monitor.
- Still having issues getting my Valve Index to run smoothly on the eGPU. Unsure where start with that.

These results are really screwy, so please ignore them until I can work out why. In the internal testing I got no display but a valid benchmark, and in both cases the 4K to 1080 difference makes no sense. FPS is for AVG 99th.

Did you experience or have any data related to power consumption? I mean, in NVIDIA's website they list RTX3080 as needing a min of 750W, and the Razer Core X Chroma provides 700W for both system + GPU. So I was wondering whether that could create any problems.

.@egon_braun, I believe the 750W is if your PSU powers the entire computer. As the laptop eGPU power supply is 700W only for the video card it shouldn't see any problems.
The only bad part of this new hardware is the power requirement. Nvidia is recommending at least a 750W power supply for the RTX 3080, as it can draw up to 320 watts by itself. - https://www.theverge.com/21435926/nvidia-geforce-rtx-3080-review
Awesome, thanks for that. I intend to do the a somewhat similar build as you did. I want to use an RTX3080 + Razer Core X Chroma + Dell XPS 15 9500.
Let's see how it goes.
Thanks for all the info! Great stuff!

The external and internal Geforce appear to be banging heads a bit, but as you can see form the figures above, the big difference in performance was on 4K uses.
@egon_braun, the 750w is for an entire PC, not a GPU in an eGPU... the max TDP of a 3080 is (a massive) 320W so tbh you'd get away with a 550W eGPU (always have a bit left over for spikes).

@eightarmedpet, thanks for the info! I did not know that!

.@egon_braun, no problem, due to my brief flirting with building PC's I have a couple of falsehoods that are perpetuated and PSU size is one of the biggest.
AMD recommend a 700W PSU for an RX 5700 XT (with the absolute min being 600W).
I'm running mine with a decent 450W, TDP of whole system is sub 400W. I am sure its best to have more headroom and not run things to their limit but the disparrity is craziness.

@eightarmedpet, Totally, I was going through this exact pain where NVIDIA states a min of 750 while most of the eGPUs cases out there state power provisions between 600-800W (for system, eGPU and optional external ports like the extra USBs you get on the Razer's Core X Chroma).
So your message helped alleviate my misunderstanding of these numbers! hahaha

.@egon_braun, glad it helped, its total madness.
