Can’t comment on the lan since I don’t use it. As for the usb ports, in my experience they are not very reliable. I use one of the port for my external drive and get disconnected sometimes. I believe some users have this issue as well. Another thing to note is if you are using 2018 MBP and newer (T2 chip), you won’t be able to upgrade Mantiz firmware. More of that discussion here.

Despite all that, it is still a great egpu enclosure for me. Depending on how you utilise the enclosure, these may or may not be a crucial issue for you. Hope it helps.

Update

I decided to play around with the new updates.

  1. Clean install Catalina ver 10.15.5
  2. Clean install Windows 10 ver 20H1

Macos Catalina  ver 10.15.5

Everything works smoothly. Coldboot / Hotboot both work without issue.

Windows 10 ver 20H1 (Tested on external display through HDMI)

  1. DDU in safe mode.
  2. Replace pci.sys
  3. disable PCI Express Root Port #3 - 9DBA.
  4. Install AMD Adrenalin ver 20.5.1. Shutdown.
  5. Replace pci.sys again (for whatever reason, the pci file revert to original after installing AMD software). This only applies if you clean install windows 10. Just verify the size of the pci.sys. The correct size (18362.295) should be 424kb if open in windows, 435kb in macos.
  6. Reboot.
  7. After everything loaded, connect the egpu.

Replacing pci.sys

You can do this either on Windows or MacOS.

Link to pci.sys file - WIN 1903 (18362.295): https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1PP4NtSWjplCYmRehxzqb-e00bZPykrOE?usp=sharing

Replacing pci.sys in Windows

Replacing pci.sys in MacOS

  1. Install third party software to allow write to NTFS (Paragon or Tuxera)
  2. Open finder. Go to /volumes/bootcamp/windows/system32/drivers
  3. Replace the pci.sys file

Things to note

  1. When trying to connect the egpu, make sure all ports are free leaving only the port connecting to the egpu enclosure.
  2. Do not connect to a wifi (do this after egpu connection successful)
  3. if error 12 persist, try to free up resources by disabling other PCI Express Port or try another port. In my case all ports are good.
  4. AMD disconnect icon in system tray seems to be missing… 😯

Hope it helps Smile

How about your experience in gaming is your cpu experiencing cpu throttling because the temperature on your cpu ? And for the 5700xt is your cpu make the gpu bottleneck ? I have the same laptop with yours and wanna use the egpu too but my concern is now the cpu temperature 😅.

@sinlext_, I had similar setup with the razed core x and before that with the gaming box rx580. In both cases the cpu was fine I was playing sim racing games at 1440. I now use the 2020 mbp and I feel it is a bit better.

@tsakal, thanks for your answer :). By the way what do you think if i use the same laptop as him (macbook pro 13" I5-8259U 8gb) and planning to use amd 6000 series after it release with razer core x enclosure will it go 1440p and more than 144 fps in online game (since i dont really play AAA single player games) like apex, tom clancy rainbow 6 siege, and valorant (im okay with all set low) ?

@sinlext_, sorry but I have no idea of these games. There is a point where the increase in FPS diminishes due to the thunderbolt. I would suggest to check the builds of @itsage with 2080ti gaming box as these will be a good guide of what to expect with the 6800 xt. What year is this model?

@sinlext_, The website was overloaded earlier today so we're still restoring some features. The build links from our guides are not yet working. I don't have an exact build with 2018 13-in MacBook Pro i5-8259U, but you can check 2020 13-in MacBook Pro + RTX 2080 Ti Gaming Box for some ideas [build link].
