Installation steps

MacOSX:
Didn't bother as there are no drivers for the RTX Series (Turing Chip).

Windows (Recommended Windows 10 Build 1803)
There was nothing to do, because the Geforce GTX 1080 Ti was running on the windows with the latest nVidia driver, which support the RTX series, too.

Comments

- Only in synthetic benchmarks the expected performance difference between the RTX 2080 Ti and GTX 1080 Ti  can be seen. For Games the difference is not that big.
- The RTX 2080 Ti USB-C port can be used for any USB-C devices Gen 2.
- It is not advisable to run a 2,7slots card with the Asus XG Station Pro closed. It fits, but because temperature increases and performance drops. (Valley 51xx instead of 56xx)

I made a full test set for gaming benchmark performance comparison between GTX1080 Ti und RTX 2080Ti. The setting as always:
-1440p
-Highest/Ultra/Extreme
- Number are FPS

As you can see the RTX 2080 Ti does not outperform the GTX 1080 Ti clearly. At least not in this eGPU Setup. In some benchmarks even the GTX 1080 Ti performs better,

The average performance is 90.4 FPS for the 1080 Ti and 97.3 FPS for the 2080 Ti which is merely an increase of under 10%.

GTX 1080 Ti RTX 2080 Ti
World of Tanks 127 150
Resident Evil 6 128 126
Tomb Raider 150 172
Rise of the Tomb Raider 88 91
Shadow of the Tomb Raider 67 74
Far Cry Primal 78 87
Far Cry 5 73 83
Batham Arkham Origin 76 74
Hitman Absolution 108 102
Deus Ex Mankind Divided 45 50
Grand Theft Auto V 78 77
Forza Horizon 4 67 72
------------------------------- ------------------------------- -------------------------------
Average FPS 90.4 97.3

There is some potential for overclocking of the RTX2080Ti as I could quite easily get some performance boost by just increasing some values. It is no sophisticated stuff as I am no expert in it and don't want to overclock other than for this analysis. It's much more difficult to overclock the GTX1080Ti, it looks like this is alreay optimized. This may be one reason for the little performance advantage of the RTX2080Ti.

On Shadow of the tomb Raider I turn off AA to bumps the FPS, I didn’t play on 1440p but 4K though. And I think on GTA V you should get higher FPS on 1440p, when I’m not wrong I got around  100fps 4K default setting on 2080ti. How about the host laptop, MacBook Pro cpu thermal? Can you upload also Firestrike or timespy, normal one? That would be great.

@joi_kansai, yes I know the AntiAliasing settings tear down the performance, but I have them on for every benchmark. In GTA V there are some sophisticated settings set to maximum, which are surely not needed, they are only for easier comparison. Don't take the absolut number too serious, both cards easily can do 100 FPS in GTA V.

Of course, I have some screenshots for you (Screenshots for the GTX 1080 Ti come later).

@oliverb Sorry if you’ve mentioned this somewhere else, but how was the performance jump for you from 13 to 15inch MBP?

@OliverB, kindly please add some FHD Forza Horizon 4 benchmarks with your RTX 2080Ti and GTX 1080Ti here for comparison purposes:

@eightarmedpet, This depends a lot of the application. If you have an application which almost only stresses the eGPU the differences are not that big. You can see this here with Superposition:
https://egpu.io/forums/psu-cables/analysis-how-much-is-the-bandwith-limiting-the-performance-a-comparison-between-tb3-and-tb2-between-external-and-internal-display/
As games always use some CPU there is more difference, e.g. Forza Horizon 4 had 72 FPS on the 15inch MPB 2018, while 50 FPS on the 13inch MPB 2015.

@nando4, Unfortunately I have just sent back my RTX 2080 Ti as I want to keep the GTX 1080 Ti. I have a set of 1440p Results for the RTX 2080 Ti, including TB2/TB3, internal and external display, but no other resolution.

I can and will do some benchmarks for the GTX 1080 Ti in FHD, if you want.

@oliverb cheers for the reply and the info, I'm just talking about gaming performance, so that example is super interesting as its quite the jump... I imagine 50% or it may have been down to generation improvements and the other 50% core increase, maybe...

@OliverB thanks for 3Dmark. As expected great graphics performance from MacBook Pro TB3 connection, but I noticed some cpu throttle there, idk if it’s power limit or thermal one,  it’s known issue on MacBook Pro due minimalist cooling room. On other side my Blade 15 with lower cpu clock, 8750H get better cpu performance due huge cooling vapor chamber but due TB3 that isn’t directly to cpu I believe, Graphics performance is lame, but seemly this has also benefit lower cpu temperature (my guess) on egpu setting.

I’m also on same boat returned my 2080ti, but kind miss 4K performance on some games like SoTR, 2080 aka 1080ti still laggy on some scenes.
