Plug and Play with no problems on Mac Mini 2018
Unigen Valley (Custom, Ultra, 8x Tesselation, 1440 x 900):
Intel: 7.8 fps; 327 score
Radeon 570: 45.1 fps; 1887 score
Unigen Heaven (Extreme preset):
Intel: 7.6 fps; 191 score
Radeon 570: 34.2 fps; 862 score
Cinebench Open GL:
Intel: 44.77 fps
Radeon 570: 79 fps
Bruce X (FCPX):
Intel: 1:14 export not pre-rendered
Radeon 570: 35 seconds not pre-rendered
Comments The eGPU has definitely improved graphics performance.
What I noticed that is strange is, while I got better frames per second speeds with the display plugged into the eGPU, while rendering FCPX files (not just BruceX, but previous projects I re-exported as tests), having the display plugged directly into the Mac Mini itself resulted in slightly faster exports. Nothing crazy, but within a matter of seconds in most cases; BruceX actually rendered at 29 seconds with the display plugged into the Mini versus the above 35 seconds when the display was connected to the eGPU. Perhaps somebody has some insights as to why this might be? I ran these tests several times with the same results. EDIT: I should add that I'm connecting via HDMI to HDMI; and I did set each app to Prefer External GPU.
Also, I ran the eGPU on my old MacBook Pro 2014 15-inch, via a TB2/TB2-3 cable, and ran purge-wrangler and purge-nvda to get it to operate...running the same benchmarks, very nearly across the board on every test, this set up, while definitely significantly faster than the Nvidia 750M that's in the 2014 MBP, was consistently about 35% slower than a T3 set up*. (ie, one project I exported that took 1:35 on the Mini with T3 cable then took 2:09 on the 2014 MBP with a T2/T3.)
(*Or is it more accurate to say the T3 set up is 26% faster? I got caught up in that distinction, lol.)
Pending: Add my system information and expected eGPU configuration to my signature to give context to my posts
I know this is a few months old (sorry for the necro) but I'd like to know what brand of GPU you're using? I just got my 2018 Mac mini in & I'd like to set it up with an eGPU. Thanks a ton!
