The Mantiz enclosure is sitting below the table on a chair so it's out of the way and not visible in any normal usage.
Virtually plug and play. Plug in eGPU enclosure to TB3 port on laptop. Download and install NVIDIA drivers. Restart and add games in Settings -> System -> Display -> Graphics Settings to choose High Performance (eGPU) instead of iGPU. Also tweak settings in NVIDIA control panel for maximum performance.
I've used this Mantiz Venus enclosure (early build, 80mm fan and no protective foam on the daughterboard) with other GPUs (GTX 1070 & 1080) on a number of other systems in the past (XPS 15 9550, XPS 15 9560, XPS 13 9370) but I have to say 10th-gen Ice Lake CPU with integrated TB3 controller is easily the best eGPU experience yet. The reduced TB3 latency seems to do wonders for frame pacing which is frankly amazing and feels virtually indistinguishable from a desktop experience. Compared with eGPU setups I've used in the past, I have virtually zero random microstutters or poor 0.1%/1% FPS performance. If I hid the hardware and put someone in front of just the keyboard, mouse, and monitor I bet they'd be hard pressed to guess they're playing games on a laptop+eGPU setup.
CPU is undervolted by 50mV and PL1 TDP has been adjusted to 34W. CPU temps peak at 89C during Cinebench R20 multi-core workload and all 4 cores clock in at 3.1-3.4 GHz. Gaming CPU temps usually peak around 80-85C depending on title and game settings. CPU performance compares very well to mobile H-parts - a little out of reach of the 6-core i7-9750H/10750H parts but equivalent to or faster than 4 core parts like i5-9300H/10300H or i7-4790K on the desktop. Quite impressed with the thermal design and headroom of something so thin and light. Not bad for Intel's first go at 10nm.
Admittedly the CPU is still no powerhouse when speaking in absolute gaming terms, so when coupled with a relatively powerful GPU like the 2080 Super I try and adjust detail settings in most games to be more GPU-bound than CPU-bound. Some anecdotal in-game framerates @ 1440p from recent games I've been playing:
CoD: Warzone: 60-90fps
Kingdom Come: Deliverance: 60-90fps
Risk of Rain 2: 140+fps
League of Legends: 150-200+fps
Updated my original post with some hardware pics.
Nice Build! Do you experience any issues with Warzone? Frame drops and stutters in Downtown for example?
Thanks! Only very occasionally when there's a lot going on at once which seems to hit the CPU hard. Otherwise frame-pacing is quite smooth and framerate drops aren't usually severe enough to be noticeable in normal gameplay.
Have you tried any other GPU with this laptop? I'm looking for something to pair my xps 7390 and 1080p 144hz display, for gaming purpose, best out of buck
Thanks for sharing and glad to see you've managed to squeeze a fair bit out of your Dell. I too have the XPS 13 7390 2 in 1 with the same CPU config. Currently it's hooked up to an older HP Omen accelerator with a GTX 1060. Plug and play works well but it always seems to operate on reduced framerate or something. Scrolling webpages is very laggy and dragging a window gets very choppy. Logging out and back in again resolves the issue. I was wondering if you experience something similar? Running Win 10 Pro 2004
This is fantastic, thank you for taking the time to show this. I have this exact XPS13. Was considering upgrading to Tiger Lake, similar config with a 6800XT.
Question (possibly stupid) - do you always have the laptop open? If I'm using an external monitor and keyboard / mouse, does is support wake using this config with the laptop closed? Would it being closed be a bad decision due to the obvious heat issues? Was going to throw it on a notebook cooler, or similar.
Thank you again!
DECISION: Asus Flow X13 w/ XG 3080 mobile OR HP Spectre 1165G7 tiger lake w/ tb4 and RX6800XT and eGPU???? Please assist!!!
