I'm back on the EGPU scene after a 4 year hiatus, last build was here. 14" HP 8470P + [email protected]+c-EC2 (PE4L 2.1b) + Win8.1 [ jakethesnake438] - Implementation Guides - PC - Tech|Inferno Forums
This X1 Extreme has given me some headaches, but most of them were to do with the Lenovo drivers suite
I was having major issues in BF5, where the CPU was pinned at 100%, this was resolved by disabling IGPU and closing the internal screen
System specs:
- Lenovo X1 Extreme Gen 2, removed mesh on air intake for better airflow
- 2.6 GHz Intel Core i7 9750H (Liquid Metal) Happily sits at 90deg C @ 3.990ghz, ambient ~21 deg C
- 32GB 2x16 2666mhz Ram
- Intel HD Graphics + Nvidia GTX 1650 Max-Q
eGPU Hardware
- Akitio Node 400w
- MSI Reference 5700 XT
- Included 30CM TB3 cable
- Dell P2715Q 4K Display
Setup
- Install Win 10 20H2 Fresh from MS site, don't use Lenovos recovery
- Disable Thunderbolt security in BIOS
- Install drivers manually from Lenovo. Key driver is the Intel Thermal Platform driver, this enables CPU to break 80deg C soft limit
- Don't enable Hyper-V or any WSL support, this causes issues with windows writing to some thermal related registers as referenced here
- Install forked version of TPFanControl from here
- Install AMD Driver 20.4.2, performance issues with later drivers
- Close internal screen (for improved BF5 performance)
Tuning with throttlestop:
- Undervolted @ -200.2 Core, -150 Cache, -90 SA,
- IccMax @ 255.75A
- Disable and Lock Turbo Power Limits
- Turbo power long max at 80w
- Short power max at 90w
- PL4 130
- PP0 ignored
Performance:
- Cinebench R20: 3107, fastest score I could find online
- Battlefield 5: > 60fps @ 4k Low on multiplayer
- Battlefield 4: > 80fps @ 4k High on multiplayer
- Ungine Superposition 1080p Extreme: 4546
- Ungine Superposition 4k Optimized: 6254
- More to come
Have you tried AMD 20.4.2 driver with the Superposition benchmark?
