Installation was not plug-and-play, I just needed to have the appropriate Nvidia drivers on hand for installation and it is otherwise plug-and-play after that. It's worth noting that the Core X powers on/off depending on whether it is connected to a laptop.
It works identically to my previous setup involving a ThinkPad T470 since the eGPU hardware is the same, just with a different computer since my use case now requires more portability than before. And the extra quad-core oomph will be helpful. How exactly this performs at sustained load remains to be seen but it looks like an improvement across the board regardless compared to my previous i5-7200U on paper.
