Comments (eg: how has the eGPU improved your workflow or gaming)

Testing mantiz pro with a friend's 2080 Ti this weekend. Overall very disappointing performance with the 3080 FE. Need to diagnose whether the issue is the gpu, drivers (unlikely since other 3080 egpus have been fine), or the enclosure. Notice the super low cpu scores on the 3080 benchmarks caused by stuttering.

Update 9/25:

I undervolted properly after watching a youtube video and it fixed it. I didn't know I had to actually open the voltage curve editor. https://imgur.com/a/jV7s2Lg

Now I'm at ~13k for graphics score, up from 11k, and my cpu score is normal now.  Most importantly I'm not stuttering or throttling anymore. It's still quite a bit lower than the standard 14k egpu performance or the 17-18k desktop performance but hopefully Nvidia fixes everything with a driver soon.

Update 9/27:

The undervolt stopped working for me all of a sudden. However, disabling integrated graphics seems to fix things for me without having to bother with undervolting/underclocking....

@yo2u

I would try to cool the uncooled chip that is responsible for TB3 with a thermal pad or copper sheet

image

your performance is 1/3 less than mine; that would definitely be much better!

@w7_basel,

Thanks - I actually did read that post and disassembled my laptop. I ended up adding a copper ram heatsink to the PCH with thermal pads on both sides and touching the aluminum bottom panel. Unfortunately the performance didn't really change. https://www.3dmark.com/3dm/50680265?

Here's the chipset temp right after the run:

It's still weird to me that the benchmarks seem fine for the aorus 1070 box and dedicated GPU. I think I just gotta test with the 2080 ti this weekend.

@w7_basel, Just curious if you know bit how thick of a thermal pad would you recommend?

@robeet

no idea is certainly different for every laptop; you have to try ...
when in doubt, bad is better than nothing

I recently ordered this:

@w7_basel, Do you have to cover the whole thing or just the silver part of the chip?

@robeet, do you mean the PCH? i have a laptop without this chip ... but actually the green one is just a transition for the conductor tracks and no heat

It seems this post seems to be onto something.

The underclock + studio drivers didn't help 3dmark, but it did stabilize flight sim and world of tanks for me.

I think the 3080 + drivers are causing more throttling than normal. On 3dmark my cpu is definitely throttling and reaching 100C every few seconds, even with throttlestop (not an issue with 1070 or dgpu). Hopefully new drivers will fix something.

@yo2u, That's surprising. My 2080 TI FTW3 Ultra with a Chroma X and 16" i9 MBP gets ~13.2k for the Timespy graphics score. This is even with my CPU set to use 10W max (using throttlestop) and running at 60C. I'm interested to see your performance using your friend's 2080 TI. I'm guessing the 3080 just has some really bad driver issues, or there's something wrong with your specific unit?
