Building the Watercooled eGPU

Building the waterloop for the eGPU was surprisingly simple and required very little modification and no specialised tools. You can find a more detailed forum post here.

Installation

Installation was very simple: Plug in the  Wikingoo eGPU  with it already powered on and wait until Windows has installed device drivers > install latest Nvidia graphics drivers > Done.

It can be hot plugged, cold plugged, will display the Windows login screen, support Windows sleep-states and can even display my system BIOS from either a cold startup or system restart. The later of these was something that my   Aorus Gaming Box   1080 could not do. Furthermore, it works exceptionally well while being daisy-chained through a Thunderbolt 4 dock.

I added a TdrDelay ValueData of 10 and a TdrDdiDelay ValueData of 20 in the Windows Registry Editor to allow Windows a longer 'timeout' period for the GPU to respond. It has fixed many crashes and BSOD errors in previous   builds  , with no downside whatsoever.

I changed the Nvidia Power Management Mode to 'Prefer Maximum Performance'.

I further modified the Windows Registry to add Link State Power Management into my Windows Power Settings.

Steps to do these can be found here

GPU Overclocking and Thermal Performance:

I used a Gigabyte  GTX 1080  Mini from an  Aorus Gaming Box  1080 and a Bykski Waterblock. Originally, the GTX 1080 would peak at around ~72C. In the loop with a +196Mhz Core Overclock and +503Mhz Memory Overclock, the GTX 1080 never goes above 55C with the fans and pump set to only 50%.

Compared to the original Gaming Box 1080, my Unigine Heaven and 3DMark TimeSpy Score both increased by ~9.7%.

Very nice and clean upper aesthetics, I didn't knew there were 1080s that small.

Time is worth what we do with it.

@boltoway, looking forward to your Dell XPS 15 9510 build.

Also eager to see Dell's 12th-gen refresh of that laptop with higher MP webcam sometime soon.

@nando4

I was tossing up between the XPS 15 and ThinkPad X1 Extreme Gen 4. I'm very happy with it so far and look forward to updating my build.

I'm also keen to see what they do with 12th Gen and how well it works with eGPUs, although I am the opposite about the webcam as it is basically the last hardware specification I care for on a device haha.

@boltoway, Can't speak for the Dell but not particularly impressed by the X1E4 because it's very locked down- there's no undervolting because the workaround is locked out and the override for the power limit throttling also doesn't work so what you get is what you get. Thinking of moving on to a proper thin and light gaming laptop when I upgrade from my X1E2 tbh so I don't care for the XPS either.

@dxphegpuio

There were mixed reviews for the X1EG4.

So far the 9510 has been really good. It is basically silent when running through the eGPU and not using the RTX 3050 Ti. Dell has tuned the thermals a lot more than previous XPS series so it doesn't get nearly as hot under the initial turbo boost like the old models did.

Take a look at the Intel NUC X15 laptop. It was another one of my options but it didn't have two Thunderbolt ports so I decided for the XPS. It can be purchased as a bare-bones kit or branded as the Eluktronics MAG-15R / XPG Xenia 15. It is very well reviewed and probably the cleanest gaming laptop available alongside the Razer Blade

@boltoway, X15 looks alright at first glance and the price is right if and only if I reuse my old components- much cheaper than the MSI GS66 and Zephyrus M16. Thanks, will keep an eye on how their Alder/Raptor Lake iterations turn out as I already missed the boat on Tiger Lake with the 3070 M16 which was discontinued partway through.
