Hello everyone !

This time, it might become my new daily !

System specs :

Laptop :

Lenovo Legion 5i Pro Gen 6 (16ITH6H)

i7 11800H / 32GB DDR4 / 1To NVMe PCIe Gen4x4

dGPU : RTX 3060 6Gb

Screens :

- main : Acer Predator XB271HUBMIPRZ (27" WQHD 165Hz IPS)

- secondary : SKILLKORP SKP_E20-27 (27" WQHD 144Hz VA)

OS :Windows 10 21H1

eGPU hardware :

eGPU enclosure : Razer Core X Chroma

TB3 Cable : from Razer bundle

eGPU card : MSI GeForce RTX 3080 VENTUS 3X 10G OC (hardware limited to 320W)

Hardware pictures :

Desk ans eGPU mod : PSU fan and case fan replaced, another fan added on rear face

20210811 231152 F2048x2048

Internals :

20210802 230105 F2048x2048

Installation steps :

Hardware : I find out 16Gb stock RAM was single rank R16 DDR4, known to be slow. So i upgraded it to 32Gb dual rank R8:

Stock RAM :

20210810 220349 F2048x2048
20210810 220400 F2048x2048
SR AIDA64
SR CUDAZ

Upgraded with CRUCIAL 32Gb :

20210810 215056 F2048x2048
DR AIDA64
DR CUDAZ

Next steps were simple : original OEM OS, basic windows updates, hotlug eGPU and install lastest drivers for RTX.

No repaste this time as thermal are alrready really good Smile

As undervolt is unlock and Throttlestop working well, I made some adjustment :

- 4.2 all core boost > 4.5 all core

- CPU and cache undervolted @ -0.75mV

As those settings are stable, benchmark are done with it :

Superposition medium 4k : 10397

Superposition Benchmark v1.1 10397 1628791112

Conclusion :

> This laptop is king of bulky and heavy for classic eGPU setups, but it's a beast !

> Thermals and CPU management are top notch

> Got 2 thunderbolt 4 ports, one with usbc charging (100W) and one with out.

I use one for eGPU only an main screen and the other one for HP G5 dock and second external screen

System can be used without main AC adapter with no TB4 eGPU impact, just some CPU limitation when hitting full load.

> 16" 500nits QHD 16/10 screen and fullsize keyboard > love it

I really like this laptop and might going to use it as my daily 😉

Thank you for sharing! How is performance with 3080 eGPU compared to the 3060 dGPU in this laptop?

To do: Create my signature with system and expected eGPU configuration information to give context to my posts. I have no builds.

This device have a 3060 @130W and a mux switch.

As for benchmark :

3060 dGPU on internal display with optimus on :

3060.internal.Timespy.4.5GHz.uv 0.85mV

3060 dGPU Timespy on external display (display ports on TB4 and HDMI are directly connected on dGPU) :

3060.external.Timespy.4.5GHz.uv 0.85mV

3080 eGPU Timespy to compare :

Timespy.4.5GHz.uv 0.85mV

Amazing result!
Do you notice a drop in CPU score when using Timespy with USB-C 100W PowerDelivery vs laptops included charger?

On usbc 100W, CPU profile auto switch to balanced and 25W PL1 / 45W PL2, so there some limitation but still better than any 4C tiger lake.

Here timespy result with no AC adapter, eGPU on side TB4 and usbc 100W dock on rear TB4 :

Timespy.uv 0.6mV.usbcpoweronly

Still decent on USB-C.

Can you check if Resizable BAR is supported in the Nvidia settings for the RTX 3080 eGPU on this laptop?
The 3080 may require a VBIOS update if the laptop support it.

Yes It's supported :

RBAR

Yes I'm french so enjoy the interface language Smile

In addition, to get rid of the classic stuttering with the duo nvidia DGPU / nvidia eGPU, I use an HDMI dummy on the HP G5 dock to keep dGPU awake and not having to disable it.

Like this one : https://www.amazon.fr/gp/product/B07YKGGQTJ/

dummy

I put dummy screen as duplicate of one of my other screen to keep it clean (number 4 is my main screen for gaming) :

dummy.conf

man these are great posts.

Do you play warzone? I'm super curious on something for anyone else reading this.

On rebirth mode, you get massive frame drops when looking at the middle of the map due to (I think)thunderbolt bandwidth issues. Wondering how an 8 core TB4 setup works instead of my 4 core tiger lake system. Just testing out theories.
