I bought the Node Lite so I could do some testing with eGPU, I will get a GTX1060 but I can test what I have in my house with it.

PC System

  • ASRock Z270 mITX
  • Core i3-7350K stock speeds
  • 8GB of Cruical DDR4
  • Samsung SSD
  • Windows 10

eGPU gear

Software configuration

I got the latest drivers from the web for all the devices.  It was almost a clean install of Windows 10 latest version.  Initally it didn’t work with the firmware out of the box but with the B1-25+4.4.3 firmware updated it was OK.

Benchmarks with Win10

With video card in PCIe slot

NVIDIA Quadro K620

Unigine Heaven @ 1440x900 = 39.3fps

Cinebench R15 = 87.75fps

NVIDIA Quadro P400

Unigine Heaven @ 1440x900 = 29.4fps

Cinebench R15 = 80.76fps

AMD FirePro W4100

Unigine Heaven @ 1440x900 = 23.2fps

Cinebench R15 = 55.15fps

AMD Radeon Pro WX 2100

Unigine Heaven @ 1440x900 = 37.0fps

Cinebench R15 = 83.19fps

With video card in AKiTiO Node Lite TB3

 NVIDIA Quadro K620

Unigine Heaven @ 1440×900 = 36.5fps Down 7%

Cinebench R15 = 86.61fps Down 3%

NVIDIA Quadro P400

Unigine Heaven @ 1440×900 = 27.6fps Down 6.5%

Cinebench R15 = 71.97fps Down 10.8%

AMD FirePro W4100

Unigine Heaven @ 1440×900 = 22.5fps Down 3%

Cinebench R15 = 53.8fps down 2.5% 7% down

AMD Radeon Pro WX 2100

Unigine Heaven @ 1440×900 = 35.1fps 5% down

Cinebench R15 = 83.19fps

PCIe Bandwidth tests

AMD W4100 in Node Lite AMD W4100 in PCIe slot

Here the PCI Tree with P400 on it showing the system uses a x2 3.0 low power JHL6240 controller making it a neutered 16Gbps-TB3 link.

Soon I will add my system & eGPU details or a build link to this my signature to give context to my posts

Have you posted your Mac mini set up yet? Wasn't able to find it?

Nice. Look forward to seeing the results. Shame tagging doesn’t work on this forum! I’ll keep my eyes peeled.

PCIe Bandwidth tests added to the opening post.   Sadly I’m getting hard reset of PC, when I connect display to the eGPU and disable the output of video to Intel GFX.

I did a clean install of Windows without ever using the iGPU, now there isn’t crashes so it seems the iGPU doesn’t like the eGPU.  I got the drivers from ASRock website not intel.  The P400 was working too.

I tried to use it in Ubuntu. No go with 16.04 with Kernel 4.10.

Hi Toby, May I know what's your TB3 driver and NVM version? As i couldn't detect the box, i'm having TB3 15BF driver 17.2.671.250 and NVM 8.

I used the ver:16.2.52.250 drivers from Asrock site.  I'm not sure what the NVM8 is, I didn't need anything other than the TB Drivers.

Sorry looks like the pictures were deleted from the hosting site I used.  The low power GPU's could be installed in the case without any problems, I just bought a 120W brick to make sure they could get upto 75W.  with the 1060 I had to cut a notch out so the 6pin connector could be fed out the back for the Dell DA PSU, kareon on eBay has the cables.  if you want to close the enclosure then you need to ask him for the special adapter it's not ideal though as it's got no plug so I would stick to a GPU that needs no extra power, which I assume isn't much use for most people.
