I have been looking for more laptops with Thunderbolt 3 connection attaching directly to the CPU. So far the Thunderbolt 3 15" MacBook Pro is the only such host. I have good news. The Alienware 15 R3 is configured the same way with a x4 PCIe 3.0 over Thunderbolt 3 connection to CPU.

Most people who buy one of these gaming laptops will probably not consider an eGPU. They have valid reasons. There are downsides for having such a powerful GPU inside the laptop though. First of all, Geforce Experience caps the GTX 1070 at 30FPS by default when on battery. When this option is turned off, the fans on this AW15R3 are very loud during heavy graphics use.

The fans run at much lower speed when the eGPU takes over. This of course comes with performance loss. I ran Unigine benchmarks with the dGPU powering the internal display and the eGPU powering the external display. I received the AORUS 1080 Gaming Box this morning so I added some quick benchmarks on this table too. Here are the numbers.

An additional great review. Thank you. Great finding a non-Mac TB3-CPU host too.  This will be a good system to benchmark the upcoming GTX1080 Aorus Gaming Box. Since that GPU is 20-25% faster than a GTX1070, we may see it outbench the GTX1070 dGPU

@Nando4, I re-ran the AIDA64 tests and updated the original post. I received the AORUS 1080 Gaming Box today and did some quick benchmarks on it as well. First impression is that the 1080 eGPU indeed can beat 1070 dGPU.

Am amazed that the Alienware 15 R3's GTX1070 dGPU outperforms the GTX1070 eGPU in raw computing numbers. Nvidia really did step up in their Pascal series to see mobile chips match their desktop equivalents in performance.

We see too the GTX1080 eGPU now does show the expected 20-30% improvements in raw computational and synthetic benchmarks.  Given the losses across TB3, does that now see the GTX1080 TB3 eGPU match or outperform the GTX1070 dGPU in some games?

I'm running game benchmarks and the GTX 1080 eGPU barely edges out the GTX 1070 dGPU at 1080p. At higher resolutions, my guess is the GTX 1080 eGPU will enjoy a wider disparity.

Usually in this cases there is a cpu bottleneck at 1080p and a gpu bottleneck at 1440p/4k resolution.

You need to assay the performances gain based on the resolution scaling when reviewing powerful gpu like the 1070/1080 and a locked cpu.

I'm not sure you can translate the performances gain differences between the 1070/1080 like you could do on a desktop.

Since even with a good 4x pci-e, it is not fully comparable with a desktop/laptop grade 16x wide, especially on minimum framerates and general frametime.

Can you do some tests for Ultra Wide Monitors at 3440x1440. That will be very interesting to see how the Gaming Box copes with that.

I will be running tests with a 4K monitor at 1440p and 4k resolutions. I don't have an ultrawide at 3440 x 1440.

Hello everyone . As the new aorus box approach , so is the one of the GTX 1080mini from gigabyte . My aorus box 1070 is working fine but i can't help wondering while reading these first reviews : is the enclosure exactly the same , and then is it easily feasible to swap from the 1070 to the 1080 mini ? Thanks for your answers .

To do: Create my signature with system and expected eGPU configuration information to give context to my posts. I have no builds.

I'm interested in that as well.

Also would like to know if  issue with half bandwidth has been addressed.

Any thoughts, itsage?
