2018 13" MacBook Pro [8th,4C,U] + RX 5700 XT @ 32Gbps-TB3 (Mantiz Venus) + macOS 10.15 [phoenix2063]
Between the RX 5700 XT being supported in OSX and Mantiz having a £100 off sale, I couldn't pass up dropping the hammer on both to finish off my setup 😎
2018 MacBook Pro 13 inch with touch bar, space grey
CPU: Intel i5 2.3GHz quad core
Memory: 8GB 2133MHZ
Mantiz Venus MZ-02, space grey
- Stock fan upgraded to a Noctua NF-A12x15 low profile 120mm, it's a big improvement over the stock fan which stayed at the same speed all the time (if you do the same i'd advise buying a cheap offset screwdriver as the screws are difficult to reach).
Gigabyte Gaming OC 5700XT triple fan design, barely audible under load
Stouchi Thunderbolt 3 braided cable, 1 metre is plenty for my desk
- I'll be looking to add an SSD to the eGPU , will hold off on bootcamp until then to make storage easier.
Asus Rog Strix XG32VQ: 32 inch (2560x1440) curved monitor 144HZ
Logitech G560 RGB lightsync speakers
SONY WH-100X M3 noise cancelling bluetooth headset with USB-C charging
Das Keyboard professional, mechanical keyboard with cherry brown switches, includes two USB 3.0 ports
Razer deathadder gaming mouse
Blue Yeti bundle: Microphone / boom arm / shockmount (not hooked up at the moment)
Desk from Ikea, have three Samdi walnut stands for my MacBook / headphones / phone
Benchmarks: I've not done anything like this before so any advice you could provide such as programs to use including a way to check FPS in game would be helpful.
- When running the heaven benchmark I ran both twice at both 1080p and 1440p at extreme settings right after each other, for both I got slightly better score on the second run.
On each run at the same point the benchmark, there's a low FPS drop to 9.6 at 1080p / 9.4 at 1440p. This happens when the video between scenes 18 & 19. Has anyone else experienced this same drop? Before it dropped the lowest FPS score was holding at 30FPS until around scene 10 then dropped to 18FPS, before the low scores above. Perhaps it's early drivers?
- Geekbench score ran before and after connecting the eGPU, massive jump as expected.
- In both tests the CPU stayed at or below 50 degrees and the GPU was barely audible.
I'll be installing some free games on OSX such as League of Legends, DOTA2, Fortnite, World Of Warcraft free trial, also have some Total War games purchased, may pick up Borderlands 3 for Mac. So hopefully will be able to update with real world performance, suggestions on what to try welcome.
Will be looking to try bootcamp once I install a SSD in the Mantiz, probably January so will expand the games tried on the Windows side.
Nice build and great to see pics of your set up!
Where did you buy your cables? I’m in the market for a 1m tb3 cable and the one you mention is new to me...
Picked it up off UK Amazon, feels well made
cheers! Sadly they are out of stock but i'lll keep an eye on them...
Nice setup. My Mantiz just arrived yesterday too. It came with a slower bandwidth speed firmware. When I benchmarked using Heaven, sometime it stuttered. What is your Cling bandwidth speed?
Unfortunately mbp user with T2 chip unable to update Mantiz firmware 😔. I haven’t got my hands on 5700xt yet. Still considering which gpu to get.. I need to upgrade my 1080 60hz monitor as well so its gonna take a while 😂
Hi， I have the same system as yours except razer core x，in MacOs 10.15.1，it's perfect。I havn't tried bootcamp ，I will buy ssd ，I'm not sure if it could work perfectly on WTO（win to go），if you have any further information please tell me ，thank u very much。
Having some performance issues on Mac Diablo 3 I was hoping to get input on.
No matter what settings I change, playing in windowed or fullscreen, at 1080p or 1440p, my FPS hovers at 58/60 when nothing is happening in game such as being in camp, and then drops to about 50 in combat. I should be getting much higher than this and yet it's the exact same FPS at both resolutions? OSX monitor display settings are at 144hz, on Catalina 10.15.1
I'm also getting this graphic error in parts of the game, typically happens in very dark spots on screen or very bright areas such as lamps or when my character has a shout/aura active, such as in the screen shots. It's not happening throughout the game (yet), but is a concern and something i'm hoping there's a solution for.
Has anyone else has these issues playing the game through eGPU on Mac? I'll ask Blizzard support as well though I expect they wont be much help on eGPU compatibility.
hovers at 58/60
Is there a vertical sync somewhere? What Mac and display you're playing on? Is the display connected to the GPU in the eGPU?
Hey I was wondering what your performance is like in WoW at 1080p on max settings. I already got my 5700 graphics card but I'm still waiting for my Razer Core X to arrive. Many thanks in advance!
Pending: Add my system information and expected eGPU configuration to my signature to give context to my posts
@joevt Didn't have v-sync enabled, turned it on and now at 1440p my FPS is now 120/140 as i thought it should be but i'm still getting the same graphic error? My monitor is connected to the GPU, i'm playing with the internal Mac screen on as well so I can have Spotify open but have tried in clamshell as well, didn't help.
@maartenpeeters Butter smooth at 1440p, haven't had the same graphic issue as with Diablo3
performance is like in WoW at 1080p on max settings
60-75 fps, 1080p
38 fps, 4K
Standing in Dwarven District, Stormwind
Is it safe to use the Mantiz with the side panel off? The whole eGPU is quite warm to the touch under load, even with an upgraded fan airflow is restricted. Would an upgraded power supply generate less heat and with a better fan help exhaust it?
Ideally I think the Mantiz should have extra ventilation on the other side panel, with the option to remove the SSD mount inside and instead install another low profile 120mm fan.
The tricky thing is the fan screws are only accessible through the bottom gap but two are covered by the lip of the right side panel so it needs to be removed.
I removed the right side panel and bought an angled Phillips head screw driver for £1.50 to get the screws underneath. Rather than having to use screws Noctua fans come thing rubber supports so it was very easy to just slot them through.
