Hello friends,

I have a perfomance issue with my eGPU MSI GTX 1660 Super

System specs

  • LAPTOP MSI GE72 2QC
  • Intel Core i7-5700HQ CPU @ 2.70GHz
  • iGPU Intel HD Graphics 5600
  • dGPU NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960m
  • windows 10 Home 1909

eGPU Hardware

Hardware pictures

Benchmarks

Laptop Screen

External TV Screen with same graphic settings

AIDA64 Benchmark[Same result on external and internal screen]

The same GPU on desktop getting Valley score more than 3000, but for me even at external TV got only around 1400.

Same for the games. Assassin's Creed - Odyssey would get 45-60 FPS on desktop but for me only 18 FPS. ETC for other games.

Things I have tried

  • Install Nando DIY eGPU Setup 1.35. Disable dGPU. Change eGPU to gen 2. Change PCI Compaction to 36bit - 56.25GB. Result: Same performance.
  • Tried my External TV screen but got only 30% extra performance. Not what it should. Tried differend HDMI cables, nothing changed.
  • Tried NV Inspector to lock the FPS at 59.7. Result: Same performance
  • Tried DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller) with safe mode, clean unistall, disable windows drivers auto update. Nothing changed. Same performance

I don't know what else to try! I would appreciate in advance your help!

I’m sorry to say but there’s nothing you can do. If I understand correctly you have connected your eGPU via the WiFi PCIe port considering that you have 5th generation CPU it all adds up to not having good performance.

WiFi PCIe port is PCIe X1 and you CPU makes it PCIe 2.0 so basically you are running your eGPU on PCIe X1 2.0 which has a total bandwidth of 5GT/s. Your normal desktop solution would have PCIe X8 2.0(40GT/s) or higher which is eight times more with what your getting currently.

@kian_moiny, Yes that's correct. I'm using the WiFi PCIe port for my eGPU at X1 2.0. i'm wondering how it is possible other older laptops getting better perfomance? Do you think my WiFi PCIe port isn't enough fast like other older laptops? If I connect the eGPU to M.2 port (now is connected my SSD), do you thing that i will get better performance?

@sassanisgr, older laptops shouldn’t be getting better performance (with the same GPU)if you have a link to them I’ll check it out. As for your M.2 slot only supports SATA protocols NOT PCIe meaning you can’t connect eGPU through it.

@kian_moiny, It seems to be that the problem! mPCIe x1 gen2 reached the limit. mPCIe is working better with GTX 900 series, at least gen 2. Thanks for your time and help!

You're very welcome

To do: Create my signature with system and expected eGPU configuration information to give context to my posts. I have no builds.

@sassanisgr, Hi! did you manage to improve or solve it? I was just about to make the same setup but my MSI is a GT70 2PC. Also, did you say that a 900 series would give better performance than the 1660 super? By the way, I tried this tool to calculate bottleneck on my system (similar to yours and only got 19%) https://pc-builds.com/calculator/Core_i7-4810MQ/GeForce_GTX_1660/0zq13wlu/16/
