I don't, I don't know what I am doing. More on that at the bottom, but first my build!!

System specs:
MacBook Pro late 2016 15" With Touch Bar (WTB),
Processor: 2.7GHz Core i7,
dGPU: Radeon Pro 455
iGPU: Intel HD 530
macOS: High Sierra 10.13.5

eGPU hardware  (eGPU enclosure, video card, any third-party TB3 cable, any custom mods)

eGPU enclosure: Razor Core X
Video card: MSI Radeon Vega 56 8GB
Cable Matters 6ft TB3 cable

Hardware pictures

will have to upload later

Installation steps (what did you do to get it all going?)

The only thing that would have made this more plug and play is if the card was pre-installed. opening the Razor Core x is super simple: move the handle at the back of the case 90* and then you can slide the internal tray out. from there I was able to remove the foam insert, remove the hand tighten screw holding a cover plate, install the Vega in the PCIe slot, plug the two 6x2 power lines already in the case (If the lines were 4cm longer they would have been perfect, but they work fine as is.) slide the tray back into the case and move the handle to the locked position. Then I plugged my 4k tv via hdmi to the vega & the TB3 cable into the right side (I thought I read somewhere that that was better on the 15" MBP) of my MBP and powered everything on. The screen flickered quickly about 3 times on my mac as it was figuring out was was attached. Then everything was fine!!! Kind of...

Comments (eg: how has the eGPU improved your workflow or gaming?)

This build is still in progress. Ideally I will have 3 monitors (3 dell 24" or 27" 1920 x 1200) I will mostly be working with excel and web based platforms by day, and by night continuing to learn swift and python with casual gaming (its a mac so staying with PS4 for now)/ editing of drone footage through basic apps until I can invest time/$ in more serious software.

The Problem

Since I do not have the monitors that I want yet, I have plugged my tv into the egpu really to just test out the card. When the tv is not connected to the egpu, my MBP does not seem to utilize the egpu at all. Any suggestions? Also any suggestions on monitors ~200 other than the dell? I do like that the Dell can be oriented horizontally or vertically with the included base, but I am open to other suggestions if you got some! Thanks!

I have same combo with Vega56 and Razer Core X.
My current monitor is so old and only support 60hz.
I think I will go with LG 29WK600-W: 29 Inch UltraWide IPS Monitor

  • 75Hz
  • 1080 x 2560
  • HDR10
  • 1ms motion blur
  • AMD FreeSync support

I think that is the best deal in 300$ with ultrawide

Anyway, you can search monitor in following site, I see some cheap monitor of Dell under 200$ that support FreeSync too.
