System Specs

  • Late 2013 Macbook Pro 2.6 i7 Iris Pro 1536
  • MacOS 10.14.3 (18D109)
  • Internal Display

  • Akitio Node Modified with a Corsair SF600 SFX power supply
  • MSI RX Vega56 8GB OC Airboost

MacOS only build.
99% plug and play.  Booted into recovery, ran csrutil disable, shutdown macbook.  Booted macbook with GPU attached (I have the dreaded Thunderbolt shutdown problem), ran purge-wrangler.sh, only enabled AMD GPU, nothing else.  Restarted Macos, GPU showed attached and functional.

Valley Benchmark - Internal Display

  • 1440x900 Medium Settings Min/Max 29/89
  • 1440x900 High Settings 28/79
  • 2560x1600 High Settings 24/52

Significant improvement in running Elder Scrolls Online.  I was running 1024x768 on the intel GPU, it did ok on a few higher settings but was choppy, most everything on low.  Now I set it on 1440x900, settings on medium to high, with most of the extras on and it runs better than before.  A stutter here and there, but still nice.  Would probably be able to squeeze more frames out of it with an external monitor, but I am trying to minimize cables.

The Vega gets really warm, the fan on the MSI will push out some heat.  Hopefully soon there will be a way to keep the fan on constantly, but it seems to do ok right now.  I don't have any way to check the temps.  It's not something you want to grab and hang onto while its running full tilt.

Overall very satisfied.  Much faster than my previous old quad mac mini rx580 setup.

Update:  Ran a 2nd Valley with external display.
Valley - External Display

  • 1600x900 - High Settings 36/124
  • 1600x900 - Ultra Settings 31/133

I don't know about the higher end framerate on the Ultra settings.  Runs very well on a simple Dell 1600x900 monitor.
The Radeon blower revs up and down once it's getting more bandwidth not having to send it back to the internal monitor.  Gets a bit loud, but doesn't bother me that much considering how well it works.  Might bother some who want a silent workspace.
