Despite being a late 2013 model year, my Mac Pro trashcan is only two years old. The processor and dGPUs are long in the tooth so I did some upgrades both internally and externally. I swapped a 6-core Xeon E5-1650 v2 for a 12-core E5-2697 V2. These old Xeon CPUs are being retired from data center and available on eBay for relatively cheap.

While I was upgrading the CPU, I decided to give the dual FirePro D500 dGPUs a good cleaning and new thermal paste. The trashcan is built very well and doesn’t have much tolerance for errors when putting the parts back together. I struggled with the circular top and bottom alignment but all was well in the end. 🙂

System specs:

Late 2013 Mac Pro – Xeon E5-2697 V2/2x Radeon FirePro D500 dGPU/32GB RAM/1TB SSD

eGPU hardware:

Mantiz Venus + Radeon VII + Apple TB3 to TB Adapter + 2m Thunderbolt 2 cable

Hardware pictures:

This corner of the house is my eGPU testing area so I had been looking for a set of wireless mouse and keyboard that can be shared between multiple computers. I finally found Logitech multi-device keyboard (K780) and mouse (MX Master) to be the perfect pairing. They have hard buttons to switch between three computers. The 2018 Mac mini is not visible but it’s behind the ASUS USB-C monitor which sits neatly in the ledge of the keyboard.

Installation steps:

@Mac_editor‘s Purge-wrangler was the essential tool to enable eGPU on the Mac Pro. Hot-plug, sleep, and hot-unplug have been working well in Mojave. Radeon VII doesn’t have good drivers yet so there’s some misbehaviors during sleep and shutdown. I could only use eGPU in macOS because the firmware of this Mac Pro 6,1 doesn’t allow eGPU in Boot Camp.

Benchmarks:

AMD Ryzen really pushed CPU performance value in the past two years. This 12-core Xeon could barely match the 8-core Ryzen 7 1700X. The E5-2697 V2 is half the performance of the Threadripper 1950X. I ran some quick benchmarks with Luxmark 3.1 and Geekbench 4 to show the performance of this single D500 and dual dGPUs vs Radeon VII eGPU.

Comments:

This Mac Pro benefits greatly from CPU and eGPU upgrades. Using an eGPU not only improves performance but also reduces heat significantly due to the triangular heatsink is shared between CPU and dual dGPUs. It would no doubt extend the life of the computer because the majority of issues in the 6,1 is due to discrete graphics card failure.

Such a shame the trash can never made it past v1, it was an incredible piece or kit. With Navi on the horizon I wonder if we would have finally had suitable Gpu replacements for the Mac Pro (I recall apple saying they designed themselves into a thermal corner with the trash can but wonder if die shrink would help to solve that).

I bought the trashcan because it has many similar characteristics of the G4 Cube. They’re unique looking and to some beautiful inside and out. Also opening them up is an experience. Here’s a gif I made of the G4 Cube’s latch/handle.

For such a small computer, it’s fairly modular. Not in the traditional sense because other than CPU and RAM, the other components are proprietary. Still it’s better than having all major components soldered onboard. I’m afraid the 2019 Mac Pro will be as locked-down as all the recent Apple products.

Hi @itsage ! So greatefull if you can help me...

Finally i found someone who manged to do what iv been trying for months now! 😉

I got away from PC to MAC to get away from all the "Hacking" back in the 1990-2000... But now im in the shitter...

Im in Heavy Grading & Rendering Right Now in Davinci Resolve and FCP X and really want my new 8K Card to work and help me...

Im trying to Get my Radeon VII in Razor Core X to work with my MacPro 2013 TB2 Trashcan and my MacBook Pro 2017 TB3 in New Mojave 10.14.5 (should work straight away right!?)

IM GETTING THIS ERROR tring to run Pruge-Wrangler again after the 10.14.5 Update

SharpShooter--SkyShooter-STUDIO:~ skyshooter$ purge-wrangler

sudo: unable to stat /etc/sudoers: Permission denied

sudo: no valid sudoers sources found, quitting

sudo: unable to initialize policy plugin

What Permissions does it need? Iv think i tried it all... Repairing in "DiskUtility" or Instaling new OS X from SafeBoot(did not work), I Repaired then in" Terminal" which said "Sucessfull"

Or does the Core X and or Radeon VII need some kind och NEW Firmware or patch etc!? Been searching and trying different leads but without positive result...

One guy said to:

Just add 0x1005 to config.plist > CPU > Type.

https://www.tonymacx86.com/threads/macos-10-14-5-update.277160/page-5

But i havent understood how to do this!? Wher is that config.plist ??? Or should a create it?

Cant find the PGM he is using and don't understand how "Plist Edit Pro" works and does this...

What did you do?? How did you get it to work mate???

@marcus_cf_tinnerholm Ideally if SIP is enabled, the script does not run and prompts a message stating so. This seems like bad permissions as described here:  https://stackoverflow.com/questions/36264655/lost-permission-for-sudo-in-osx-el-capitan

Try the troubleshooting steps mentioned there (even though it is El Capitan sudo mechanisms are largely unchanged) and ensure SIP is disabled.

Yeah SIP is disabled since my first Purge-wrangling in prior OS X. And I also doublechecked now again as-well as turned it ON/OFF again!

In the prior Mojave the eGPU worked on Booth MacPro 2013 Trascan TB2 and MacBook Pro 2017 TB3 with VEGA 56 and VEGA 64 but never the RADEON VII because of the lack of support/drivers as to my understanding.

What persmissions can it be???

@marcus_cf_tinnerholm I am building the same setup with the Radeon VII in Razor Core X and 2013 MacPro on 10.13.6 & apple's TB3-2 connector and it kinda recognizes it...  it sees the Razor Core X in sys report and doesn't call it Radeon VII under GPUs (called display)  and it doesn't show up in Activity monitor as one of the GPUs...  Would you or anyone know what the next step is to use this card on this version of the software...?  Thanks in advance.

@editology macOS only starts providing drivers and eGPU support for Radeon VII since 10.14.5. You need to upgrade your 2013 Mac Pro to at least 10.14.5 in order to use it (with Purge-Wrangler).

@itsage I was afraid of that.  Thank you for clarifying.   But I should be able to use a GTX 1080 in the Razer Core X with High Sierra ... right?  Just with Purge Wrangler?

There are web drivers for GTX 1080 in High Sierra. Once you upgrade to Mojave and newer there’s no web drivers unfortunately. Purge-Wrangler does multiple tasks but for your particular setup it enables eGPU functionality on Thunderbolt 2 connection and either AMD or Nvidia patch for your eGPU. If you have the space on the internal hard drive, you can partition it to run both 10.13.6 and 10.14.5+.

I swapped the eGPU enclosure to NetStor HL23T-Plus. This is the only enclosure I found to work with the Radeon VII without sleep issues (fans running or not sleeping). By default, Energy Saver has Power Nap enabled which wakes the Mac Pro up every so often. Once I unchecked this box, the computer + eGPU setup stays asleep very predictably.

I might have corrupted the firmware of my 2013 Mac Pro during a failed macOS update tonight (to 10.15 dev beta 7). The Mac Pro has been working great with NetStor HL23T-Plus + Radeon VII eGPU so I thought leaving them in during the system upgrade was fine. This had been done several times prior without ill effect. Not this time unfortunately.

The Mac Pro would boot up with eGPU fans running full speed then settling down. However there’s no monitor output through the Mac Pro directly. With or without the eGPU made no difference, the nMP doesn’t seem to respond to any keyboard input and there’s no monitor output. I proceeded to reset NVRAM and SMC but no difference. I also opened it up to reseat the RAM modules and cleaned up while I was at it.

If you have any ideas for me to try next, I’d appreciate your help.

Your best bet would be try installing on top of your existing installation again and see what happens (all eGPU peripherals disconnected of course). You could either try Catalina recovery or create a bootable Catalina install (can be any beta, doesn’t matter) and use that. This is assuming you have the ability to at least select boot disks. Let us know how that pans out.

@mac_editor Unfortunately it doesn’t have monitor output or keyboard/mouse input. The power light comes on and stays on but it does nothing. I tried a different set of wired Apple keyboard and mouse too. I will do a clean macOS install on a different stick drive then swap in place of the original drive.

Hmm sounds like a scary situation for a headless Mac to be in. How did you verify keyboard input failure without screen output? In your build, you are using a wireless keyboard. Perhaps switch to wired (though you have likely tried this). Edit: ok you tried this. The biggest problem is that any possible workarounds to try require keyboard input.

Also, what kind of startup chime do you get? Or none?

The USB Apple keyboard typically flashed green on the Cap Lock key during powering up. It got nothing when connected to the nMP now. There’s also no boot chime. I ran NVRAM and SMC several times without success because the nMP didn’t respond to input. I had a 10.13 macOS install on a stick drive to test just now. Unfortunately it’s the same behavior.

I will take it apart tomorrow and boot without the cover to see if I can get at the diagnostics LEDs inside.

Roger. One option to “reset” NVRAM is to replace the boot without CMOS battery, then with it maybe. Edit: probably just removing it and waiting 10min is sufficient.

Thank you for the research and input @mac_editor! I ordered the correct coin battery to replace just in case. Should be here this weekend and I’m hoping that’s the fix.

A reminder to myself and others, disconnect your eGPU prior to doing a masOS system update. 🙂

I spent the afternoon swapping the coin battery as well as putting the stock 6-core CPU back in. Unfortunately it made no difference in boot behavior. The system would turn on but there’s no boot chime, monitor output, or keyboard input. I also checked the diagnostics LEDs on the back-side of the power supply board. When the system was OFF but connected to power source, LED 1 & 3 would turn GREEN when the DIAGNOSTICS BUTTON was pressed. When the system was ON, ALL 7 LEDs would turn GREEN when the DIAGNOSTICS BUTTON was pressed. No LED was ON otherwise. This makes me think the hardware is fine but firmware was corrupted during the Catalina system update.

Sad to hear. A last-ditch experiment could be to swap out the firmware chip: https://www.ebay.com/itm/BIOS-EFI-Firmware-Chip-for-Apple-Mac-Pro-A1481-Late-2013-EMC-2630-820-3637-A-/141063551608

Do check authenticity of the above link/chip. However, it might just be easier to ask Apple and see what they have to say first.

Edit: A cooler alternative would be to reflash the EFI chip yourself with a known-working firmware version: https://boards.rossmanngroup.com/forum/board-repair-troubleshooting/2455-how-to-read-write-erase-apple-efi-spi-rom-with-raspberry-pi

The above post did note that bad EFI problems could possibly occur on Mac Pro due to bad RAM sticks.

I agree with @mac_editor, it could be that the OS also packed an update for the bios itself, the Intel ME or for the SMC.
Since the eGPU was connected to the machine, it could have pushed wrong settings or the updater skipped some part of the firmware update.

I would suggest you to get yourself a programmer like this one: https://fr.aliexpress.com/item/32903680825.html?spm=a2g0o.detail.1000060.3.720838bf0lJkdE&gps-id=pcDetailBottomMoreThisSeller&scm=1007.13339.90158.0&scm_id=1007.13339.90158.0&scm-url=1007.13339.90158.0&pvid=e6cb27e4-a170-4c04-ae3f-a41b769acf2e

Be careful to buy a programmer that support the new 1.8v memory chips instead the usual 3.3v, the listed kit also provide the 1.8v adapter.

@mac_editor and @wimpzilla Thank you for these excellent resources! I will take it into Apple first and ask for a firmware restore/update. We’ll see if they give a hand. If that doesn’t work I will give those tools linked a try. During my search to isolate possible failed component/s, the InterConnect board was a suspect given the symptoms. I checked all the pins and reseated everything properly. I believe the firmware chip is on this board [820-3637-A 661-7527].

Given the stupid things I’ve tried blindly in the past 3 years, it is remarkable this is the only screwup so far. Too bad it happened on the one computer that’s really hard to find replacement parts.

If your firmware chip is an EMC 2630 820-3637, the place below sells a solderless efi chip for 2013 mac pro that fixes corrupted EFI BIOS firmware issues such as corruptions or boot loops caused by Clover or similar EFI bootloaders.

Just another avenue of choice should you need it, good luck!

Hopefully they are successful in resetting/reflashing your Mac's Firmware. That's always my preferred option before seeking out other alternatives.
Off topic but if in the future you need parts for vintage Macs, I have had good experiences with  https://www.dvwarehouse.com/
I recently acquired a new replacement Power Supply there for my G4 Cube. They have some 2013 Mac Pro parts and used 2013 Mac Pro's one could use for spares.

That’s great to know. My G4 Cube hasn’t needed any replacement parts yet but that’s a great resource. I also learned from my visit last night that the 2013 Mac Pro has a very reasonable flat-rate hardware repair cost. For $472 they can fix whatever is wrong with the computer.

I got the nMP back last night. The Apple Store couldn’t really pin-point the culprit and offered three repair options. First is to replace Graphics Card A (compute). Second is to replace the CPU riser card. The third option is a wildcard through the flat-rate facility hardware repair. I have the solderless efi chip enroute from the UK and will give it a try. If that doesn’t help I’ll send the Mac Pro to the repair facility.

So is it up to the customer to decide what repair option to take (which may not even solve the issue)? Amusing.
