The RX 590 was launched last month for $279 in the US. This pricing puts it right in between the RX 580 and RX Vega 56. How does it perform in external graphics mode relative to the other two cards? I paired the RX 590 with the 2018 Mac mini which I tested using RX 580 and RX Vega 56 recently.

System specs:

Late 2018 Mac mini – i5-8500B/UHD Graphics 630 iGPU/8GB RAM/256GB SSD

eGPU hardware:

AKiTiO Node Pro + Radeon RX 590 + .5m Thunderbolt 3 cable

Hardware pictures:

Installation steps:

I'm using @goalque's eGPU EFI Boot Manager and disablement of a couple PCIe components at boot. These are the basic steps I took to get this setup going:

  • Install Windows 10 ISO through Bootcamp Assistant [in macOS].
  • Download and copy @goalque's automate-eGPU EFI to USB thumb drive [in macOS].
  • Hold OPTION at boot to select EFI drive and hit Q to access automate-eGPU EFI [boot selection].
  • Select View by Connection in Device Manager then locate and disable PCIe Root Port #2 - A339 and PCIe Controller (x16) - 1901 [in Windows].
  • Shut Mac mini down then connect eGPU to Thunderbolt 3 port closest to the HDMI port.
  • Boot into Windows using automate-eGPU EFI [boot selection].
  • Confirm a new Microsoft Basic Display Adapter in Device Manager then install Radeon drivers [in Windows].

The Intel iGPU should remain activated and power the ASUS MB16AC portable monitor (connected to USB-C port closest Ethernet port). This setup and boot-up procedure allows me to run internal display mode through AMD XConnect.

Benchmarks:

eGPU Interior FHD eGPU External FHD eGPU External QHD eGPU External 4K

Comments:

These results are closer to the RX 580 than RX Vega 56. I'm uncertain why AMD launched this card. The RX 580 is available for $200 or less during holiday season sales. Same with the RX Vega 56 & 64, they were sub $400 during Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Also worth of note is compatibility with macOS. I tried this setup in macOS but the XFX RX 590 Fatboy caused system crashes. This has been my experience with several XFX non-reference Radeon cards in the past.

@itsage you’re unstoppable, great!! Btw my rtx card just died last week, pushed too many games I think LoL waiting the replacement from Evga. Just noticed you’re using usb C monitor, good to know it works fine with only usb c on egpu gaming. I’ve also this portable Monitor for multiple Monitor on go purposes or PS4 at camp place, so it should also work directly from rtx card usb c port right?

are there no issues with the T2 chip? No need to disable SIP or allow booting from external media? I remember reading about having to do those steps but I forget which hardware it was...

@eightarmedpet Sorry I didn't mention Apple T2 chip. I disabled Secured Boot and allowed booting from external sources when I first got the Mac mini so that it doesn't interfere when I'm switching eGPU and booting partitions.

@itsage ahhh cool... thought as much but wasn't sure. A quick Google tells me its just a couple of Radio's with System prefs so a pretty simple step.
Hoping to get at least a 25% FPS boots going from Laptop Dual core to Desktop 6-Core...

Did you by any chance you do any testing with the RX 590 in Mac OS 10.14.2?

I've been looking at doing this combo:
Razer Core X + RX 590.

But there are basically zero testimonials from people who are using a RX590 with eGPU in Mojave 10.14.2 🙁

MacBook Pro 2017
Razer Core X
AMD ????????

@woodz The RX 590 uses the same drivers as RX 480/580 in macOS. Some non-reference RX 590 cards such as the XFX Fatboy card I got have compatibility issues in macOS.
