@odin, Nice. There are no problems with my setup right now, but if my computer dies, the gram 17 will probably be my next laptop; otherwise, in a few years (hopefully more improvements in tb3 connectivity and cooling)  😛

@odin, First I want to thank you for this amazing post. It really helped me a lot! 🙂

I currently have 3 laptops at home and I am deciding what do to with them. I have one Dell G5 (g5-5590-a25b) with a 1660 TI and one of the best Intel i7 (9750H) that runs a lot of good games in ultra or high. The thing is, I just got two LG Gram 17" the model of 2020. One for me and one for my wife. In the start I was really happy with it but then I found that those Iris Plus are a trash. So then I realized that I would either sell them and buy a desktop PC or just use then to work. Since I could keep using my Dell to play games. But now I realized that my wife also plays with me and that Gram laptop is not good to play at all. And then I discovered today that this eGPU exists. I am really happy with that, and also because all of my laptops has Thunderbolt 3. So I started to look at the requirements and then I found this post, and it confirms that I can run an EGPU on those Grams, right? So my wife can play with me xD.

I have already searched for the Sonnet Technologies GPU 550 W TB3 Graphics Card and it costs for me €290.00 and also I am in doubt if I buy another 1660ti or any other that is better. What I want to ask here by posting all of this is, is it 100% certain that it will work on my new LG Grams? If I just buy the case, then the card, and then the cable, and plug it... ? I am new into it, I am sorry for bothering!! And thank you again for the post.

Spoiler
Obs...
(BTW if someone here lives in EU and want to buy a new LG Gram 17" I have some discount codes.)

@frederiko_cesar, That's all you need. Just the egpu box, the graphics card, and the cable. The cable that comes with the Sonnet is a 0.46 meter cable (1.5 feet). If you need a longer one (2 meter is the longest they get) you will have to buy that separately, and it will need to be an active cable. This is the one I bought: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1400943-REG/xcellon_tb3_540_2_thunderbolt_3_cable_40gbps_100w_2m.html   It's been working great for over 1 year.

One thing you might want to consider is that a 1660 Ti might be a tad on the slower side for gaming at 1600p native resolution. Probably the lowest I would personally go is 2060 Super. Depends on your budget. If I had to do it over I would get a 2080 Super, but the new generation cards are coming out later this year. A 1660 Ti might be a great stop gap.

@odin Thank you so much for the info! So I don't need to worry that much by buying a cable since the Sonnet has one, and about the 1660ti you're right, it is best for me to invest in a better one, so I will go with 2060 Super or 2070 if the price is similar. Thank you so much, as soon as I have it, I will post it here. Best regards from Germany
