So, I have the Alpine ridge Gigabyte Rev 2 add in card, and looking for an enclosure for it.

Tempted by the Node lite but its overkill.

Also looking at this but out look cheap without really being so...  https://www.ebay.com/itm/Mini-PCIe-to-2-PCI-Express-16x-Slot-Riser-Card-PCI-e-1x-4x-8x-16x-Card-Supported-/253520266668?autorefresh=true

I've seen some risers that look like they are USB powered - would I be able to power them fro ma USB port or is that crazy talk? They also have adapters to power them from SATA connections so I'm not sure if they are either/or or need both (I'm totally new to PCIe riser things).

I'd love to be able to get the smallest foot print possible and then make a custom chassis - prob out of birch ply and maybe some grill.

Anyone able to point me in the right direction?

I'm thinking...

Honestly, the best solution for a Ultrafine 5K is definitely a BlackMagic eGPU Pro. I am thinking of buying one, too. Yes, it costs something, but I am actually using my computer for my profession and this being considered the price is really ok for having later much less trouble.

Note: Not to forget that you won't be able your internal screen if you have an MBP with AMD dGPU. This problem is bound to any AMD eGPU.  At this very moment I am using Bootcamp with just internal screen and my nVidia eGPU is working perfectly here...

I would agree but from what I’ve read it doesn’t work in Bootcamp. Price isn’t really an issue, if it worked in both OS it would be an insta buy, I was dead excited when it was announced, but haven’t read any reports of anyone being able to get tb3 displays working in windows

This not true. I had the Blackmagic eGPU, it was my first eGPU ever. At that moment I had no idea about anything about or this site. It took me 2 minutes to get it running in Bootcamp. It was the same as my AMD Step-by-Step guide in https://egpu.io/forums/pc-setup/step-by-step-guides-to-install-nvidia-and-amd-egpu-cards-on-bootcamp-15-inch-macbook-2018/

a) Hotplug
b) Internal Screen goes black, so just reboot.
c) It works already on external screen, internal stays back. Solutions for this are on my Step-by-Step guide.

It behaves absolutely like any other AMD eGPU. I haven't had the Blackmagic eGPU Pro, it would be a big surprise if it was any different.

You were not using the tb3 port for monitor output though were you? That’s where the issues occur.

This is identical to the IT-GO "ADP-099-31" that I've tried except yours uses mini PCIe and mine uses PCIe x1.

I've seen some risers that look like they are USB powered - would I be able to power them fro ma USB port or is that crazy talk? They also have adapters to power them from SATA connections so I'm not sure if they are either/or or need both (I'm totally new to PCIe riser things).

The USB port is used to transmit the PCIe x1 signal. The Molex, SATA, or 6-pin connectors are used to power the PCIe card connected to the riser. PCIe cards use 12V and 3.3V. The 3.3V may come from a voltage regulator that converts from 12V or 5V.

I'd love to be able to get the smallest foot print possible and then make a custom chassis - prob out of birch ply and maybe some grill.

Anyone able to point me in the right direction?

Some options are discussed at Late 2018 Mac mini + WX 9100@32Gbps-TB3 (Mantiz Venus) + Thunderbolt 3 Monitor Output + macOS 10.14.1 [itsage]
Using an M.2 to PCIe x4 adapter gives the smallest foot print but might not always work.

Cheers for the reply @joevt !
I bought this in the end...  https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01B2NP7MY/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Looking at @itsage 's builds it appears the USB to PCIe isn't actually needed and what I have bought is powered by the enclosures PSU.
I'm thinking if I get this to work I will hide it in my desk draw which will really clean up my entire set up with only one cable being needed for both my eGPU and monitor.
Fingers crossed and thanks again...

The one you bought will not work because it has PCI slots instead of PCI Express slots.

The USB connection is not used for power so it's not needed at all. It's only for the PCIe x1 communication link.

When you buy the PCI Express version, you should make sure it comes with a power supply (mine didn't even though I think it should have). I had other 12V 2A or greater adapters so it wasn't a problem. The back plate of the enclosure might be too thick so it might require filing in some areas.

To understand the USB thing better: they use the USB 3.0 connectors and cables but the signals on them are not USB. It can transmit 5gbit/s in one direction over a differential pair, so surely the 8gbit/s PCIe 3.0 x1 signal will work over it... that's the Bitcoin brain, right there. Anyways... it usually actually works.
