Yep, I think now is the ideal time for Apple to re-brand the iMac as a viable gaming platform.

It would be a savvy move.

Apple could market their fresh new gaming hardware to consumers months before the next-gen consoles come grab all the attention.

2018 Mac Mini i5 / 6-core 3.0-4.1 Ghz / 32GB / 256GB / Intel UHD 630 / PowerColor Gaming Station / PowerColor dual-fan RX 5700 XT / Mac OS 10.15.6 Catalina / Windows 2004 😏 / Dual LG 27" 4K displays

@mini-i5, I Donny think they will actually market as a gaming Mac, its just the features it has has resulted in analysts thinking they will due to its specs being good for gaming, if that makes sense? Good GPU, Good CPU, High refresh rate screen = a great machine, gaming or not.

👀 According to MacRumors, Ming-Chi Kuo says that "the first Mac models to adopt Arm-based chips will be the 13.3-inch MacBook Pro and an iMac with a redesigned form factor, with Apple planning to launch the new models in the in fourth quarter of 2020 or early in 2021 at the earliest.

(1) ARM13.3-inchMacBookPro:
The new model’s form factor design will be similar to that of the existing Intel 13.3-inch ‌MacBook Pro‌. Apple will discontinue the Intel 13.3-inch ‌MacBook Pro‌ production after launching the ARM 13.3-inch ‌MacBook Pro‌.

(2) ARMiMac:
‌ARM‌ ‌iMac‌ will be equipped with the all-new form factor design and a 24- inch display. Apple will launch the refresh of existing Intel ‌iMac‌ in 3Q20 before launching the ‌ARM‌ ‌iMac‌.

Kuo says the Arm-based 13-inch ‌MacBook Pro‌ design will be similar to the current 13-inch ‌MacBook Pro‌, with Apple planning to discontinue the Intel version. As for the ‌iMac‌, it will feature an all-new form factor design and a 24-inch display." 🧑🏻‍💻

I'm not looking forward to using a Mac with an ARM processor to be honest. They are already selling Macs with an ARM coprocessor, the Apple T2 Security Chip. It's been a terrible experience for me personally when doing repair/data recovery work. Their support staff aren't trained properly to assist either.

Apple wants to implement a vertical integration similar to its success with the iPhone. I don't think computer users will appreciate a more locked down environment than it's currently is. Take a look at this support article on the needs of reviving and restoring Mac firmware because of random occurrences or upgrades (for those who can afford the $6K+ Mac Pro).

I worked for electronics recycling companies and still have many contacts. Apple's spiel of being green is a load of marketing bullshit. Because of the soldered SSD and no clear instructions on data destruction, many recycler resort to destroying used Macs to meet DOD standard.

Interesting that Geekbench ID’s the 5700 XT GPU option as clocked at 2.2 GHz max - the equivalent of an over-clocked model.

However, 9to5 Mac provided info listing the max clock speed at only 1.49 GHz.

By the way, a Mac Mini with 10th-gen low-power mobile processor also popped up in the GB database today. (No Mac Mini updates on Apple's site though)

10th gen Mac Mini????

@itsage, I don't agree this time. Soldered SSD are better for security and Apple being green is not marketing since this kind of marketing doesn't work with nerds (and this is sad since the planet and animals are our future). Staff will get better over time. I work in IT also I'm an Apple specialist and even if a T2 Mac restore could be problematic I didn't needed it one single time and I have hundred of costumers and clients.

ARM CPUs will boost performance and diversificate from PCs.

@mini-i5, that 10th gen equipped Mini is a really interesting find!

I'm not sure where I sit with ARM Macs, no Windows support is going too be an issue for me so will need to see what solutions are available...

@joevt, argh rats, didnt think of that... which is daft considering I'm on one atm.

Its model number correlates with the current late 2018 models which points towards a hack but then the Mobo is listed as an Apple one (I think) or is that spoofed by SMBIOS?

Soldered SSD are better for security

No not at all. All of the security features Apple wants can be implemented using a non-soldered SSD. IIRC one feature the T2 chip has is that the SSD and it are linked (1:1). But then Mac Pro has upgradable SSD so clearly alternatives are possible even within Apple. From a security perspective I do see and know the advantages of T2 - but soldered RAM/SSD are unnecessary for them.

Does not mean it doesn’t happen others. @itsage also has a wealth of experience with Apple stuff, so it’s important to get the whole picture of the situation.

@itsage I actually like that Apple cares about being eco-friendly but soldering components has an opposite effect lol.
