New Computer Desk and New Mantiz eGPU Enclosure
It's been three months since I moved. The new place has a fun loft area but worn out carpet. I finally got the flooring replaced with hardwood and it was time to set up the new desk. The components are mostly from IKEA (2x ALEX drawers, 1x KARLBY countertop, 1x ADILS support leg, and 2x SIGNUM cable trays. It took a while to assemble all the pieces and cable management took even longer. Before I could even use the desk, my dog made himself at home. It was 6am so he's sleepy still. 😀
There are three sections for computer setups. The top right is for a laptop + eGPU enclosure. The top left is for the 2013 Mac Pro. The bottom left is a PC Desktop. Currently I'm housing a X399 Threadripper 1950X + RX 5700 XT Red Devil in a BeQuiet! 500DX case. This computer case, CPU cooler, and fans are exceptionally quiet. There's a GC-TITAN-RIDGE AIC in it for Thunderbolt 3 connectivity.
Mantiz shared with me at CES20 their new eGPU enclosure would be available this summer. The specs would be best on the market yet [750W PSU, 100W PD, SATA, 5x USB, Ethernet, and SD card reader]. Without much notice, a package arrived late last night from Hong Kong. Here are some photos of the Mantiz Saturn Pro (tested w/ Radeon VII).
If you have used the Mantiz Venus, you would feel right at home handling this new eGPU enclosure. The brushed aluminum texture is more defined than the smooth surface of Mac products. The size is slightly smaller than the Razer Core X and it's much lighter. Inner cage slides out the same way the Core X does. The PSU and fan arrangement are also very similar to Core X (ATX and 120mm).
My first impression is the build quality improved a lot compared to the original Mantiz Venus I tested more than 3 years ago. There's a metal shield for the Thunderbolt 3 mainboard in this Saturn Pro. All expansion ports are going through a secondary Thunderbolt 3 controller. Again specs-wise it's targeting the Core X Chroma (w/o RGB). I don't know retail price yet but it's less than $399. Will have a full unbox and teardown soon.
Wow, great to see a new enclosure! Looks really nice and love the flooring and the balcony railings too... sounds like Mantiz have created another winner with features price design and build.
Look forward to the full tear down and review.

@eightarmedpet, Thank you! I had only an hour last night to play with it. The enclosure was very quiet. While taking photos, I noticed the large PSU fan was off (light load). If you checked PSU prices lately, a decent 750W ATX unit isn't cheap atm. Placement of this power supply cooling fan is better than Core X because it pulls in cool air from right the right side of enclosure. The 120mm cooling fan is mounted to a metal bracket. This makes things easy to install a GPU with AIO liquid cooler. I will use the RX Vega 64 LC for this test.
Its a great setup! maybe a monitor arm next for more desk space in front of you!
Can i ask what is the stand you are using for your Macbook Pro? i have read that you should not do anything to intense with the Macbook Pro in clam shell mode, is that why you have the laptop open like this or is it more too with having the screen usable?
@daniel_obrien, Definitely could use a mount to remove that massive monitor stand off the desk. I have a desk mount arm but the weight ratings were too close for comfort lifting this one. Regarding the laptop stand, it's a dual purpose as you mentioned. I got it at Best Buy - Aluratek Universal Foldable Laptop Stand. They no longer cary this particular product but similar laptop stand are plentiful. It helps with cooling and I can keep cables, external SSD underneath.
@badtz, It keeps the economy going!
Out of morbid curiosity (I have my fill on enclosures for now) does the new Mantiz sleep properly with the Radeon VII?
@ningauble77, Good question and the same one I had as soon as I opened the package. Radeon VII does not go to sleep accordingly to power state in this new Mantiz enclosure. It's really sad to see AMD completely ignores eGPU users.
@itsage, that's a rather lovely setup you've concocted! Good to see Mantiz gearing up to release a new enclosure. However, they should not be ignoring existing customers.
If you don't mind me asking, what are your use cases (besides testing eGPUs ;p) for the 3 devices?
