Hello Community!

”long time reader, first time poster” (thanks to egpu.io for helping me get into this whole mess!)

I had a 2016 13” MBPro when I first set up my eGPU (Akitio Node, Vega56) With a 23” 1080p monitor then moved to a 2018 15” MBPro and added a 32” 4K monitor. I am now awaiting my i9 iMac, basically fully loaded (16GB 5700XT). Since I primarily VM (I’m way too lazy to constantly boot between OSes: macOS is my everything, Windows for gaming alone) but I do occasionally Bootcamp (since newer/fancier games choked like mad on my setup) I was wondering whether I should bother to eGPU my 4K. VMWare has a 3GB vRAM limit on GPUs anyhow and there’s no way I’m using 16GB of vRAM in my day-to-day (I don’t video edit, scientific compute, etc) and I also don’t know how effectively macOS distributes resources between monitors.

Wow. I sure don’t know how to keep it concise! Lemme try again:

What impact will using my existing eGPU (Vega56) have versus the built-in 5700XT for powering my external 4K?

Thanks!

2020 iMac 27" 10-core i9, 128GB RAM, 16GB vRAM 5700XT. AKiTiO NODE w 8GB vRAM Vega56 and 32" 4K external. BootCamp Win10, VMware Win10, VMware Mojave

You should be good using the 5700XT to accelerate your external display.

Let us know how you like the performance of your new setup.

@mini-i5, thanks!

this has me wondering how the universe will look once the raytracing beasts are unleashed...

Yeah, we'll get new raytracing videos from Nvidia during their event at the beginning of September.

AMD will likely want to show theirs around the same time frame.

there; got my system specs up. Struggling through BootCamp and VMWare setups. We'll see if I can toil through them or will require help... (Windows loads fine, but Din's Legacy is a hot mess; VM max is 1080p and Din won't even fire up...) definitely looking forward to VMWare Fusion 12 and its bump from 3GB vRAM to 8GB.

Presently focusing on getting that running 100% internal. Since the Vega56 is unlikely to help more than the internal 5700XT, I'll wait on the upcoming raytracing GPUs before I eGPU my setup.
