@sabrefv, I’m ordering R43SG and the manufacturer says it doesn’t support MSI GL63 8RC. I doubt it, so will order it anyway and check.

Does anyone have experience with egpu for MSI GL63 or similar series?
Thanks a lot.

I'm a total noob and I’ve been reading website and forum last couple of days... this is a goldmine, thanks!

I have a MacBook Pro (Retina, 15", mid 2014) + 2.8 i7 + GT750M + macOS 10.13.6
I use it for home projects (nuke, resolve, houdini).

Now I’d like more GPU power for rendering, before eventually go for a machine update.
I was thinking to go for a Razer Core X + GTX 1080ti (for cuda). I found various posts with similar build, but I’d like to double check before hitting the trigger. Thanks for the patience!

If you think this setup might be a good idea… any advice on which model/manufacturer of 1080ti should I go for considering my current 2014 machine (don't care about the looks, simpler the better)?
Is it a good idea to try and buy an used one on ebay (UK)?

Many thanks again for all these info!

@miltos_mavromatis, Yes it certainly seems like you have an NVME capable m.2 slot which should make it M.2 PCIE that supports either an SSD or NVME store. If it's M.2 PCIE then according to everything I've seen and read tat makes it compatible to run an eGPU setup.

@aleksv1114, I just looked up the site and the vendor says "We highly recommend to use it for PC desktop, not for laptop. There is low success rate for laptop due to the Incompatibility, especially for HP, Dell, Lenovo)"

I have read quite a few posts on this site that shows some challenges when using laptop ports such as onboard m.2 PCIE ports (eg white listing). It's always a challenge and depending on your laptop many different things can happen. It's very frustrating for me when I start a project and have lots of challenges but it;s a learning experience and no one wants to purchase equipment and not have it work. It does happen and that's for sure why they wrote that.

@ecnezie, I'm not a Mc expert. Just a few What is the processor specifically on that macbook? The GTX 1080Ti needs a fairly powerful processor to get full benefit. For Nvidia cards on MACs you will need to run bootcamp as I believe they're not compatible with MACOS. Also Bootcamp makes MACs quite hot in my experience (especially older ones) and this may impact you if you game for long periods. Do you have Thunderbolt 2 ports? if yes you will need T2 to T3 adaptor and only get half the bandwidth of T3. If you have T3 then thats much better.

@sabrefv, I’ve recently read it, so useful!
I think it’s ok to have issues while doing such kind of upgrade, not even worrying but sure will struggle haha.

thanks for your help!

Update: found this thread, if anybody in my same condition... lot of info, and some bad news I guess. thanks!

@sabrefv, thanks for your reply!

_processor is i7-4980HQ, 4 cores, 8 Threads 2.8 Ghz, with 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3

_I have T2, but I was thinking to use and adaptor on this T3 eGPU, to be more future proof once I will (hopefully) update for a new machine.

_I'm planning to use it on Mac High Sierra, using the script found here in the website, mostly for CG rendering and editing/compositing. Checking iStat when using those apps, CPU seems quite free while my actual card (GT750M) maxes out. Not planning to bootcamp or game at all... for now at least 😀

Basically I hope this could be a solution to get more rendering power while keeping my machine for now, that might also be usable on others in the future. But I'm no experts at all, hence I'm asking here

Thanks again!

Hi,

right now Im using EXP GDC 8.5c NGFF with PCIE gen 3.0 x1 capabilities for my build, but because I have 1 NVME port that capable up to PCIe gen 3.0 x4 I'm thinking to buy ADT LINK R43SG for wider bandwith and better performance.

until I found  this thing on aliexpress, M.2 KEY-M to KEY A-E/E Adapter Riser Card for M.2 NGFF PCIE

anyone had tried using that adapter on x1 connector? is it possible to get x4 width when I'm using my EXP GDC NGFF with that adapter which will plug in to my x4 NVME port?
