@jawwad_malik - The ZBook G1 also has a Thunderbolt1 port, does it not? I have used the Expresscard interface on a ZBook 15 G2 back in the day, and it does work. I then switched to a Thunderbolt2 eGPU, and then a Thunderbolt3 eGPU running via Apple's TB to TB3 adapter. All of these options worked for me. I think the G1 is not going to have more problem than my setup (you can find all these setups in the build table). The one thing I ran into is that I had to disable the iGPU or the dGPU to get rid of stutters if I was running an Nvidia eGPU. With AMD you might not need to worry about that.

Give your Node Pro a second Thunderbolt3 controller for reliable peripherals by re-using a TB3 dock (~50$).

@jawwad_malik - I have not tried the m.2, so I can't comment on that. BIOS was not a problem for my ZBook 15 G2 with regards to Expresscard or Thunderbolt2.

@yukikaze This means that I should just connect my exp gdc beast to Express card of my laptop then just install the graphic card and power supply , install the drivers and I am good to go..

Pretty much. I did not run into any weird issues with my G2.

Hi community,

I am new here and this is my first question.

I am planning to use an eGPU on the M.2 slot with my Lenovo Yoga 530. Is someone experienced in using this notebook with an external GPU? I don't want to buy all the necessary equipment to note that it will not work.

Thanks in advance!

I noticed while watching a video that the m.2 exp gdc v9.5 has two hdmi inputs, could it also be used with say, 2 mini pcie inputs or an expresscard input and mini pcie input?

You can't combine multiple PCIe slots into a single PCIe link. You need a PCIe connection with at least x2 lanes like a socket 2 "key b" or socket 3 "key m" M.2 slot.

I have not had any problems, i simply plugged it in, uninstalled my mobile gpu drivers, turned windows update to manual so that it wont try to install the mobile gpu drivers, and then installed the drivers for my egpu, make sure not to disable windows update because it will reinable itself and then try to install you mobile card drivers which will conflict wit your egpu’s

My asus ROG G752vy has a broken gtx 980m video card,
I would like to know if there is any problem using an eGPU.
Is there any conflict?
I don't know what to do, but I wouldn't want to get rid of the notebook.

Hello, bit of a new user, although I've lurked some

I have some concerns whether my mPCI-e port is gen 2.

Also an imgur album with more pictures and questions about the other things cause I'm curious as to what they are.

Considering I have and AMD HD7670 dGPU and I've got my eye on either a RX 480 or 580 hopefully - what would be best? nVidia 1050's and 1060's are way more expensive where i am ATM
I've read the EXP GDC beast is unreliable/unstable on gen 2 (if that is what I have) - what does this mean? what problems?

Where's best to look for a PCE164P-N03 ? Is it reliable? Whats missing on it? what version are there/how to find a one? I'm searching but seeing so many different ones for varying prices

Also - whats the difference between EXP GDC v8.0 and v8.4d ?

Greetings,

I need help. I am currently planning to create e-gpu setup with the new Acer Swift 5 (SF514-54T) running with intel i7 ice lake latest gen. But I can't seem to find the laptop model Thunderbolt Pcie lane type? I am hoping it is running pcie 4x lane as suggested for e-gpu setup. Can anyone verify this? Also, if theres any alternative ultrabooks that can replace Acer Swift 5 please let me know. I am from Malaysia btw.

Thanks in advance,

Hey, you can try the i7 version of Lenovo Yoga, or the Dell XPS 13 or HP Spectre x 360. Here's a good link for the rest:  https://egpu.io/ultrabook-buyers-guide-external-gpu/

I have been deciding between buying an ultrabook or a gaming laptop ( just that I need to sell my eGPU AMD RX560 then) too haha.

Have a nice day!

Hello, I just want to ask with that setup I've a chance to get 60 fps FORTNITE(low spec) and 120+ fps(low spec) in League of Legends... I don't want to pay so much for a new laptop... Now I've 10 fps on Fortnite(low spec) 60-80 fps(low spec) on LoL..also I want to ask bandwidth thing... for RX550 its writing 112GB/s max BandW.. will it be decreased due to the bandW of my miniPCIe bandW? pls answer...

Thank to god I think I found the best forum 😉

I bought an asus N552VX with decent spec except my GPU which is a little outdated for some games. I have an nVIDIA GTX 950M. I bought it on ebay and too quickly because in my mind I made confusion btw 950M and 950...

I just need to upgrade a little bit my GPU, I aldready have the PSU of my destop GTX 460.

At first I would like to buy an eGPU but my laptop only have TB1...  😥

The best option would be add an external GPU to my PCIe slot but there are 3 Options availaible !! :

1) My laptop have the M2 Wifi key that can be removed to replace with a mini PCIe -> GPU (with EXP GDC). That would be nice because the slot is close to my DVD-RW and I don't have to remove my SSD.

2) Second option is the ADT_LINK R43SG or EXP GDC NVMe -> GPU because my laptop have the NVMe slot. It seems to be more powerful because the PCIe is 4x ... But what about software ?

3) Third on is to use the M2 NGFF -> GPU adapter . Because my SSD is in the NGFF form.

############################################

I am looking what is the best adapter to buy to have a chance to make it run correctly ! 🙂

My spec is : ASUS Vivobook Pro  N552VX : Intel Core i7-6700 HQ, 16 Gb DDR4 RAM, Nvidia GTX 950M + Intel , PCIe x4 SSD  + HDD SATA 3, USB 3.1 Type-C Thunderbolt 10 Gb/s, UHD Screen.

##########################################

I'd like to tell my laptop was Linux resistent, and because of the dual GPU, I had no choice to boot on the correct GPU from the BIOS, so I installed Linux Mint, blacklisted the driver, installed the good proprietary nvidia driver and reboot to make it work. The 4K screen was a problem and Linux mint 19.1 was the only distro that boot correctly Out of the Box.

I think I will remove my SSD and HDD, then reinstall an OS another SATA SSD especially for gaming on my eGPU 😉

Your laptop does not have Thunderbolt 1 or Thunderbolt 2. It has a Mini DisplayPort for displays which is not the same as Thunderbolt 1 or 2.

The manual for the N552VX does not say anything about the M.2 or mPCIe slots. If you have a choice, go with M.2 because it has more bandwidth. Your laptop can use a normal 2.5" SSD for booting.

Google "N552VX" "M.2". There are videos and info about the internals elsewhere (not on the ASUS website).
https://hddcaddy.eu/how-to-add-a-m-2-ssd-to-the-asus-n552-serie-n552vx-n552vw/
https://laptopmedia.com/highlights/inside-asus-n552vx-disassembly-internal-photos-and-upgrade-options

The M.2 slot is on the left side of the laptop under the palm rest area (near the LAN port). You'll need a really long cable with the R43SG (or R43SL) to go out the back of the laptop.
https://www.adt.link/product/R43SG.html
https://www.adt.link/product/R43.html

Or you can use a R43ML to go out the left side of your laptop.
https://www.adt.link/product/R43_STX.html

You'll need an M.2 extender with the R43ML:

I don't know how the laptop will behave with the eGPU and its internal dGPU. I don't know which GPU to use for the eGPU to be compatible with the dGPU. You might have to disable the dGPU. Look in the builds guide for laptops with the same or similar dGPU.
