@akmal_jihad_almascatypce164p-n03 is more reliable than EXP GDC at Gen2 link speeds. It's cheaper too. However you do not get a CTD/PTD switch so if that is important to you consider the EXP GDC:

@nando4

What ctd/ptd switch function actually? I turn off that thing and my setup still work. I interested with that pce164p-no3 because it’s cheaper. I’ve tried exp gdc from my friend, and it’s work without any problem, just plug n install driver. I’m wondering if this pce164p-no3 will work that way. And this pce164p-no3 will be better if i want to bring my laptop outside, cause i can unplug the usb in mpcie slot without disassemble it like exp gdc. So, what do you think?

by the way, thanks for the answer 😀

I had an exp gdc last time with gtx550. I plugged it into my laptop but it doesn't seem to detect. I plug the power supply wrongly and the exp gdc seems to be fried I think.

When I tried it on my laptop, the gpu doesn't seem to run. I didn't have much resource, just based on youtube. I just found out about this forum

If I were to get one, which cable should I get for Alienware m14x r1? NRFF cable ot the mpciE cable. Hope to get some feedback, thanks

I have lenovo z50-70 with cpu intel i7-4510u and gpu gt840m. What graphics card pays to buy using GPU to use the full capacity?

Is it worth buying gtx 960 or something better? I would like to use eGPU with expresscard.

I was thinking of an EXP GDC beast for my g3 and a 2070. Has something like this been done? Is it possible? Also, I was wondering if there is a way to use the beast without taking the back cover off, like a hole cut in the chassis.

Cheers!

Hello

I recently bought a HP Probook 430 g5 used for a really decent price.

It has a i5 8250u 8th gen CPU and a 256gb m.2 nvme ssd.

It doesn't look like it has thunderbolt, but it does have a usb-c connector that can charge.

Would it be possible to remove the m.2 nvme ssd and put a GPU in that slot, and just boot windows off a 128gb Usb stick I have.

Here are the specs to the machine.

https://www.umart.com.au/HP-ProBook-430-G5-13-3in-HD-i5-8250U-256GB-SSD-Laptop--2WJ89PA_41171G.html

Any input would be appreciated. I'm planning on using my spare GTX 670 with my GDC EXP 8.0 and my DA-2 power supply.

If it is possible to use the m.2 ssd slot, what device should I purchase?

Hey mate

Did you end up testing this on the m.2 slot? I have a HP 430 G5 and I want to try eGPU by taking out the m.2 nvme SSD, but need some advice on what adapter to buy, like you mentioned the EXP GDC ones are expensive..

Also, judging by your username, you happen to have a 2jz? I own a 1993 Toyota Supra RZ 2jz-gte Smile

Wow, I haven't used this forum in 2 years, just got an email that I was mentioned in a post.

I believe I tried a generic chinese m.2 adapater and was never able to get it to work. Not sure if it was something with the port/bios or with the adapater it self. I also only managed to use eGPU with my 640 G1 once. I tried to re-do it few months later after a Windows re-install and never managed to bypass Error 43. Few months later I also tried with a GTX 970 and never was able to pass Error 43. I exchanged emails with Nando probably for two weeks, trying over 100's different things and was never able to bypass Error 43 until he ran out of ideas and so did I. It's possible I just got lucky the first time.

Also, I own a 2JZ Swapped 1989 Nissan S13 Hatch, which why I have a 2JZ in my name.

Oooo nice mate. Haha sorry to bother you. Just getting into the eGPU stuff.

I had an old work laptop (Lenovo Yoga S1) and tried to plug my EXP GDC Beast to the wlan slot (mpcie), but it must have a whitelist because it just boots into a black screen.

So I installed the gpu setup 1.35 and ran that, but it still wasn't getting detected. I then put back the original wlan card and hotswapped the mcpie cable while I was in setup 1.35, and smoke started coming off the motherboard and I got scared and stopped lol.

That work laptop is still working fine, not sure where the smoke came from, but it scared the shit out of me haha.

Because of that experience, I bought a HP Probook 430 g5, and thought I might have better luck, but didn't realise the wlan card is ngff not mpcie, so I'm waiting now for a new EXP GDC ngff cable to arrive so I can try, and hope it doesn't have a whitelist.

Then I thought, maybe even if there is a whitelist, I could use the m.2 port and take out the ssd and use a USB stick for Windows. That's when I found your post lol.

What mods you got on your car?

I've got State 4 highflowed CT20s, 650cc injectors, fmic, walbro 460 fp, powerfc ecu. Making 450hp on a safe tune, use it as my daily lol.

I bought an open boxed hp pavilion 590-a0019 AMD A9-9425 desktop from best buy on 2/9/2020. And I was wondering if I should just try and return or if I can do a egpu.

This is the motherboard in the computer HP Desktop PCs - motherboard specifications, Clivia-A9 .

It has two m.2 slots 1 for M.2 socket 1, 2230 type for WLAN this m/2 slot is already occupied. And a  M.2 socket 3, 2280 type for SSD

also here if i am correct the product specifications for the computer HP Pavilion 590-a0019 Product Specifications .

I did ask on another site but they didn't really specify how to to tell if my m.2 exposes PCIe lanes instead of SATA connectivity. But I opened up the desktop and looked at the m.2 slot and the mother board says m.2 sata ssd. Does that mean that I can't use my m.2 sata ssd slot for a egpu?

Hello, i recently bought and HP Elitebook 8460p. I plan to upgrade he with I7 2820QM. I have some doubts that i wasn't really able to find yet, so i doing this topic.

1 - I planning to use EXP GDC with the Express Card, i read that it has the same bandwidth that an PCI 1X, is this correct?

2 - I planning to use with a low TDP GPU, like an GTX 950/1050, compared to a gamer laptop like Acer Nitro 515-51, that has integrated 1050, how much of performance will i lose(considering that the hypotetical Acer Nitro has an similar processor) due the "low bandwidth" PCI 1X?(if i really lose performance. i really don't know). And if i use an GPU like GTX 1060 or RX 580?

3 - How about the drivers? Due the age of the laptop will i have any problem with this?

Hello,

I have an Akitio Node 3. I'm currently planning on buying Asrock A300 desktop. Does NVME to thunderbolt 3 adapter exist? If yes can you please send me the link to buy because I can't seem to find any, only TB3 to NVME SSD key. Thanks in advance.

@yamato2211 , there are no NVME to TB3 adapters.  There are some desktop TB3 PCIe cards but they require a supporting systemboard with a special header.

Though it's more desirable to have a NVME slot than a TB3 port for eGPU use due to their superior performance and lower cost as seen at:

https://egpu.io/forums/builds/2015-15-dell-precision-7510-q-m1000m-6th4ch-gtx-1080-ti-32gbps-m2-adt-link-r43sg-win10-1803-nando4-compared-to-tb3-performance/

Consider offloading the AKiTiO Node for an ADT-Link R43SG NVME eGPU adapter to run a M.2 eGPU on your Asrock A300 desktop.

In other words, can I connect this, as you recomend but without a working gpu on the laptop? Will it boot?

I have a Clevo P771ZM, like this in this link

Hello all,

I have been reading around trying to decide what is the configuration I can build for my laptop. It is aging a bit (running with a 1050ti) and I think it is time to upgrade its graphic card. Hopefully this awesome community can help me narrow down what I have in mind :

Laptop : Asus Rog Stric GL753VE : https://www.notebookcheck.net/Asus-ROG-GL753VE-7700HQ-1050-Ti-Laptop-Review.223910.0.html

Unfortunatly, this one does not come with Thunderbolt 3 but a USB3.1 Type C (gen 1) port. So i can not use external enclosure, which would have been the easy solution here...

Processor: Intel i7 7700 HQ

Graphics Card I want to upgrade to:  Gigabyte Geforce GTX 1660 OC 6G GV-N1660OC-6GD

I am not going for a Ti version because i would aready have a bottleneck around 16% with this one. I would rather buy a Ti if i could upgrade my cpu but unfortunatly there are no Intel i7 7920HQ on the market anymore, and the newer cpus wont fit in anyway (from what i read).

EXP GDC: I would like to link the GTX 1660 trough an EXP GDC Beast, removing my Wifi card (NGFF) for that. From the informations i found here, i see that i need an EXP GDC Beast V9x : https://egpu.io/best-egpu-buyers-guide/#m2-interface

I would like to use a Corsair VS350 PSU, an ATX basic enclosure ( https://www.amazon.fr/gp/product/B00TXV6678/ref=ox_sc_act_title_3?smid=AMOTOP2RXDRQV&psc=1) with a Casemod Parts Vertical GPU Holder ( https://www.amazon.fr/gp/product/B07DP61XVV/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=A13K16IEC83D2G&psc=1).

My questions :

Is it possible to use a GTX 1660 on my laptop through EXP GDC? I havent found a similar case with a ROG STRIX using a 1660 in the builds examples listing on this website.

Where to buy an EXP GDC v9.x? I have googled it over and over, only to find v8.0 or v8.4, and I have read those wont work in similar cases with a NGFF slot.

Please let me know if I have missed something, and how to make this upgrade possible.

Thanks for all the advices !

Laptop : Asus ROG Strix GL753VE - Core i7 7700 HQ - 16 Gb RAM - Geforce 1050Ti 4Gb. WISH TO UPGRADE TO EXP GDC : Gygabyte Geforce GTX 1660 OC 6G GV-N1660OC-6GD, WOULD NEED HELP 🙂

Hello eGPU Community,

I’m planning to install an eGPU extension to my Notebook.  First, I want to thank you for this information-rich site you do a very well job.

I’m using following system:

HP Gaming Pavilion – 15-cx0004ng

  • Intel Core i7 870h
  • 16GB Memory
  • Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060Ti onboard GPU

Graphic Card I want to use:

ASUS ROG STRIX NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 OC 6G Gaming

The Pavilion don’t support TB3 and the only solution would be an M.2 enclosure.  So, the Notebook got an NGFF M.2 A-E Key Slot where my WiFI-Card is plugged in and an (hope I’m right) M.2 NVMe Slot where my SSD is plugged in. What I learned so far is that HP got a whitelist in the BIOS for WiFi-Cards, that means I will never get running an not HP supported WiFi-Card or any other device like the EXP GDC Beast. Other devices could only run if I flash a custom BIOS (Insyde), but that would be to complicate to unlock and too risky to flash because the BIOS is RSA signed.

So, its fine, because the slow data rate of the NGFF M.2 A-E also speaks against it.

Now I read that there is a chance to connect an eGPU with the M.2 NVMe Slot. I know I would lose the fast SSD, but I got another solution for this.

I’m planning to order an ADT-Link R43SG. I didn’t find other builds or users with this kind of machine and my question is, would there be a chance to get this running?

If yes, could I also use a short M.2 NVMe male to female adapter? The Idea is to attach the female part at the Notebook case so that I can plug and play the eGPU to stay mobile.

Many thanks in advance

First of all, I hope that you are staying well during these times!

I am pretty big noob. I knew about the topic a long time ago, but the fire was sparked a few days ago when I saw
a YT video from Cat and Andrews where he made a nearly destroyed laptop run GTA V on ultra.

I need some advice for my laptop, that I want to upgrade. I want to upgrade my laptop ASUS X550CL, that is bought in 2016. I would like to upgrade it for a low price because I need it for 1.5 years before I go to collage, then I plan to buy a new one. I would like to play games on it like: CSGO, LOL on 100+ fps (I am currently having 30 - 40 fps on CSGO and 50 fps on LOL). Also if possible games like FIFA 19 or FIFA 20 on lower graphics, just to be smooth.

I will provide you with the specs from CPU - Z. Also if you can recommend me if I should upgrade only my GPU or my CPU too, I am trying to do it for as little as possible. I don't want to buy a new monitor because I don't have place for it. Please write the types of GPU and Power Supply that is the best for my situation. Please write the lowest price that is possible for me to achieve this. I will provide screenshots too.

Thank you really much for your answer.

@knight-rider, I recommend the ADT-Link R43SL or R53SL for your device if you plan on using the M.2 NVMe slot go with the former, if you wanna use the WiFi slot go for the latter.

I think your recommendation will let me go for the ADT-link devices, I don’t mind if it’s on wifi slot nor the m2 ssd slot

My question is it will work on this laptop

any other recommendations do you prefer?

thank you very much

@knight-rider, going eGPU(especially non-thunderbolt) always has its risks no one can say with 100% certainty that it’ll work(unless someone has already got it running on your model) but considering that your laptop is MSI and I haven’t heard of BIOS whitelisting on MSI laptops before, I say you have a pretty good chance to make it work but remember it’s a risk that you have to take.

@darren_lam, your laptop is compatible but first you have to make sure which PCIe(I couldn’t get conformation but apparently yours has an M.2 PCIe slot as well) you wanna use and of course beware of the BIOS whitelisting 😉

Lenovo Z50-70, AMD Radeon RX 470, ADT-Link R53SR, 430W PSU

@kian_moiny, i tried looking for information about my laptop but not much came out, so I’m trying to open and look into the laptop itself but idk what a pcie slot looks like 😂
