I am very new to this stuff, but i decided to try to do an eGPU setup. I have the EXP GDC Beast, a GTX 1050, and an EVGA 500 Watt power supply. I have the beast plugged into the power supply with the long 20 pin connector and the 4 pin connector labeled "CPU", but the beast and the PSU never turn on. There are no fans on and no lights.

I can get it to turn on for half a second, then turn off again, if I unplug everything, then plug in the HDMI(plug that connects to computer), then the power, but it seems like that will break it, and this only happens when the left switch is set to "PWR".

I have the left switch set to "ATX", and the right set to off.

Have any of you had this problem, I am stumped right now.

Thanks!

Jumper the 20/24pin ATX plug's green-black wires to set it permanently on. See https://egpu.io/forums/expresscard-mpcie-m-2-adapters/mpcieecngff-m2-resolving-detection-bootup-and-stability-problems/

Also, to use a normal PSU, do you need the switch on ATX or PW?

Ok, now I did the paperclip test without the GDC beast plugged in, and the power supply fan turned on. Is there a thing to fix that?

Is the attached image what it is supposed to be? Or is the motherboard plug supposed to plug into something?

Hi

If atx switch is on the left then it should power your GPU without signal from your laptop. If its right then it will turn on after you power up your laptop.

I think it doesn't really matter which option you run but I prefer right stance, so my egpu turns on together with the laptop.

just plug in the motherboard connector....

So you saying that if you power up your laptop your egpu doesn't work ?

Ya, the GDC beast doesn't even light up. But I think it might be defective and am getting a replacement now. I hope this one will work.

I got a new one and it started working. Make sure if you are using an ATX power supply, that you have the power in the right orientation. I found out that there are 3 ways that fit, so make sure to try them all.

Thanks for all of your help!

Off topic here, does anyone know how to extend the adapter so I don't have to see it on the desk?

@Ajayajayaj

@nando4

Hi, I am seeing similar issue where EXP GDC is not turning ON at all(no blue/green led is seen). I tried the paper clip trick as well. Does ATX PWR needs to be "OFF" or "ON" to be sure. CAn you post pic of the orientation of the power cable to GDC?

Hi @girish_pawar, I have just received my EXP GDC as well but I was wondering how do you switch ATX PWR to "ON" on the Beast. There is no physical switch so do I need to unscrew it and do something on the board?

@Karou,
You have to look at the left in the pic below. There is ATX power switch (ON/OFF) (see the pic in the link) .You have to break the plastic to reach it( and there is opening for it as well on the case), I tried to open the upper plastic case using screwdriver but could not make it.

I believe we have to set to power always on without waiting for laptop signal but not sure if we have to put it to "ON or OFF" on the box. I will try it today if I can get it working : I suspect I have received a broken item. Will let you know if it works.

Here are the pictures:

All setup equipment is new and produce reciepts:
1. EVGA 1060 3GB
2. EVGA PSU 500W
3. EXP GDC 8.5

The ATX 20 pin connector has been setup so that black and green cables are directly connected so that its always on.
The CPU pin connector is connected to EXP GDC from PSU for power. Similarly GPU is having power supply connected directly from 500W PSU using PCIe power cable. The fan of the PSU is turned on immediately indicating its supplying power to GDC beast and Ideally I am expecting the green/blue led to be ON but does not seem so.

Can someone please help check if anything wrong in connection?

@girish_pawar , the EXP GDC LED will light up upon detecting a 3.3V signal from your notebook. As it's not lighting up, try another mPCIe port on your L502X if have one. If not and your wifi card works OK in the tested mPCIe slot,  then it appears your EXP GDC or mPCIe connector cable is faulty requiring replacing.

Why do you want to flip the switch, it is only necessary if you are experiencing issues.

Also, if you are doing the paperclip trick, you do not need to do the switch. The switch is like doing the paperclip trick.
