Components :

  • Check my signature.

Things i have done :

  • Wrapped the cable with aluminium foil.
  • Bought APC 700VA UPS to get rid off Electrical Interference

I have traced why my laptop hangs ... its because of the room light. When i switch it off/on the laptop hangs and i have to use power button long press to kill it. There is no other socket which is isolated from these tube lights. So i tried buying a UPS (read a reddit topic that a user solved this very same problem with UPS)  but no it does not. I am out of ideas.   please help

Update

- Kudos to Jaswant Panchumarti for verifying that the adapter works perfectly under a sensitive fluorescent tubelight environment, details here

After changing his PSU to a corsair all is well and good . details here

- Kudos to dani_tx for implementing the solution to remove all ballast tubelight with  LED tubelight(with its own ballast  no ballast) to rectify the problem, details here

- However i am waiting for the adapter to arrive to see if this works out my issue. If it doesnt i will go the tubelight route as last resort.

Looks like an EMI problem. I fear you are somewhat out of luck if extra shielding doesn't help. Are you using the mPCIe version of the GDC Beast? If so, you can try to replace the beast with this adapter. They are very cheap and reportedly have better PCIe Gen2 performance.

If it is EMI issue my UPS has sensitivity option For that saying that it can reduce Electrical Noise . Here is the pic

UPS Sensitivity

But this doesnt solve the issue. i also have warpped the adapter x16 slot with aluminium foil ... only thing left is wrapping the 8pin power cable.... Is ferrite core  option same as Aluminium foil setup ?

Regarding EMI is it really the issue ? with This UPS and aluminuim foil wrapped around the cable ?

That is soo cheap , i dont know whether that thick usb coming from the mpcie adapter will allow me to close my laptop , thats the only thing bothering me .

This is how i have set it up for now.

3754 IMG6524
IMG 6525

.

Not to mistake the black hdmi cable... its covered with aluminium foil and i duct taped it black.

And just for kicks i aluminum foiled to 8pin cable for the exp gdc v8.4d

IMG 6526

... that didnt help... guess its the new adapter then. I dont think Ferrite core beads will be much help here.

I'm that user who reported it to work with UPS , but that was a temporary solution albeit a great UPS, cuz I don't own one. I borrowed it.

I too ordered the cheap 7$ adapter, it should arrive anytime this week, will update soon! I'm positive it would work.

@nando4 unfortunately i'm experiencing the same problem, among others but turned out that switching one of the lights makes the eGPU to stop working(not entirely but the fans stop spinning and the power option in NV Control Panel disappears).Replacing or switching outlets didn't help much.Do you think buying ferrite beads would help the situation or it will be waste of money?Just need your opinion(you know more then me about those things) before i buy them.

Tell you what, i have ordered the cheap adapter from  this link , if it works out i will post it. I think switching the tubelight with led tube light should work but i would have to change three of them. I am glad i posted this title.

Hehehe....it's not my house either,i'm renting an apartment and already replaced half of the outlets and bunch of other things but that thing just got the best of me.I'm so frustrated already that i couldn't figure it out where the problem is coming from and the fact is that it start happening since i bought my new GPU,never had problems like this with my old one,so at this point i don't really care about spending $20 more, just want to be done with it.I'll keep you posted, tomorrow first thing is to buy them.

You mentioned that this problem started with your new GPU and that your old GPU was fine. Did you use the old GPU in the same room/outlet without any problems?

@favasO  GOOD NEWS: Changing the tube light with LED one....WORKED :-).No problems so far,i was flipping the light switch probably for a 30 min. just to ensure myself, but yeah, this is the right way to go.Good call man, thanks again for the helpful suggestion.

KIND OF BAD NEWS: This is just extra info in case you decide to do it.There is a compatibility issues with those LED tube lights,it's not really straight up replacement.First i bought PHILIPS(cheapest one) and even the guy in the store told me that they work only with certain models BALLAST and that i have to check which one is mine and see if it's supported.Well....it wasn't so i had to return them. Then i picked up different one(more expensive) that it's suppose to work without that damn ballast but to do that you have to disconnect it(the ballast) and rewire the whole thing completely. So that's what i ended up doing and i'm glad that i did.Now i'm certain that the issue is not really with the tube light itself but with the ballast which is drawing too much power and it's probably poorly regulated in order to affect so much the whole house not just one or two outlets. So getting rid of the ballast is the best way to fix the problem.

@andy  I think my reply to favasO should answer your question, anyway,as you see the problem is fixed and it's not about changing location or outlet(which i didn't).It's about those damn  fluorescent tube lights and the way they are design and also Pascal GPU's are much more power sensitive compare to Maxwell(i had GTX 970 before) or Kepler that if you use not proper PSU or have tube lights in your house could affect it negatively in a big way.So keep this in mind.

Update

- Kudos to dani_tx for implementing the solution to remove all ballast tubelight with  LED tubelight(with its own ballast) to rectify the problem.

Just small correction....the LED tubelight that i used doesn't need/have or use ballast at all, they made it on the basis of the regular LED light which makes it extremely efficient 16W compare to 40W(maybe even more) and the best thing....."BALLAST FREE" 🙂 . Here is a link of what i used for more info:

@favasO  To be honest man(and don't mean to discourage you) by looking back at what i experienced,i had that problem all the time(that's what made it so difficult to trace it).I didn't need to flip the light switch in order to happen. It was even worst evening time when everyone was using more electricity, but yeah, flipping the switch kind of made it obvious.I highly doubt it that the new adapter will solve the issue so better prepare yourself(mentally 🙂 ) for some electrical work and of course.....more money.Fingers crossed though.

The PCE164P-N03 mPCIe adapter that costed me 999 INR in India arrived and it works much better than EXP GDC Beast mPCIe eGPU adapter in terms of stability and performance.

The procedure followed was the same. The only modification I made was to short the pins of green and black wires so as to leave atx psu "on" always.

I've turned on and off fans and tubelight in my room many times while gta v was running and unlike the EXP GDC Beast, the PCE164P-N03 has no flicker/bsod at all.

Amazing! Splendid! Phenomenal!

For members in India, I'd suggest NOT to place order form ebay as I've waited for nearly 3 months and it hasn't arrived yet. Place order form here. It took around 5 days to deliver for me.

Wow amazing that fluorescent tubelight aint affecting the adapter.... This is wonderful news...Thank you for posting this.... i saw that link as i am also an indian but i live in KSA... hence i opted the Ebay link but still waiting for it as delivery date is from Today to Dec 5... The reason it may not have reached you is because of customs might have blocked it...i had similar experience (when i was in india) and ordered a wifi adapter from ebay with economical shipping and it never reached me ... except China Air or Honk Kong post. I will update my post to include this solution on top. Happy Gaming

Update: No bsod for prolonged usage on PCIe gen 2, BUT just a few hours back, when I turned off the fan, bsod came back, boom.

So I thought of performing some custom rigorous tests.

Both the test were at stock frequencies.

1. I ran furmark for 4 hours continuously w/o any electric disturbances for that period of time @1366x768 and 2x MSAA.

Result : No bsod.

2. I rebooted the system, ran furmark and switched on and off the fan a few times.

Result : no bsod (surprising!)

So I begin to play GTA V and my friend comes in and switches on the tubelight, and again bsod.

When I switch on/off intentionally to check for the error, I DON'T get a bsod, but when it's unintentional, it shows up.

I give up now, what's going on over here? Can someone help? This is like some probabilistic distribution.

@Jaswant Panchumarti check bsod/hang during peak hours.... from 12 pm till 10pm.

check bsod/hang when your entire floor rooms uses electricty. ie room 1 ( switch on tubelight, fan) room2 ( switch on tubelight, fan)

Bought a new corsair VS 450W psu and it works flawlessly wit the new adapter, I've updated my guide too. It's running stable and haven't experienced any problems since 3-4 days.

I can say that this is really stable now. 🙂
