Linux sees eGPU but won't display

I have a Lenovo X230T with a 980Ti hooked up through the PE4C. This setup was running without issues on Arch until about 2 weeks ago (presumably after updating -- I've tried older packages with no success). I can see both VGA outputs via lspci and am able to open nvidia-settings, but I cannot output to the display. There is no option for me to choose it. I installed Fedora 31 and the issue persists. When booting, the Fedora logo display's onto the eGPU display, but as soon as GDM starts up the eGPU stop's outputting to the display.

I've tried adding the useexternalgpu option to the 20-nvidia.conf file (in both /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d and usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d) with no success. I feel it's an X11 issue but I cannot pinpoint it. I've tried using gswitch and the eGPU display does not come on. An ideas?

First thing I would do is make sure you're running X11 and not Wayland, which is the default in Fedora. I think it's supposed to switch back to X11 when you install the nvidia drivers but something might have gotten mixed up.

Ok. Showing up in lspci, but not working means it could be the x configuration or the nvidia driver not loading correctly. I'd first check dmesg for any errors related to the nvidia driver.

It seems the driver is loading without any errors.

I noticed these lines in the xorg log. Any ideas if that ACPI issue is the culprit?

@wangcow

I'm not sure how ACPI factors in. It seems like you have a very long and explicit xorg.conf. I've personally always had more luck letting most things autoconfigure and only specifying the egpu in the xorg.conf as shown in this thread: https://egpu.io/forums/thunderbolt-linux-setup/xorg-config-for-arch-linux-dell-xps-9360-tb3/

This is also the configuration that the egpu-switcher and gswitch scripts use.

YMMV of course as autoconfiguration depends on the hardware being configured.
