Here's the Jarod'sTech base review (laptop only GTX 1650). Still waiting for his eGPU analysis.

@musschrott, This is excellent news, thank you for this! Have been keeping a super close eye on the Flow as I think it will be an excellent for for what I want. Comparing what you found puts it right at a 3060ti performance level. Wish I could decide between T4 egpu or this ... but this result makes me think this is the winner. Until the problems emerge!

Firestrike GPU score only

Desktop 1080ti (Owned)   26800
Desktop 2080S (Owned)   27641
Desktop 3060ti                31142
Flow X13                         31197
Desktop 3070                  35602
Desktop 6800XT (Owned) 52476

At the moment the question still is, if that result is somehow exceptional - given that we've seen a lot lower numbers posted by review sites - or normal, if you do what the guy has described as 'Presentation mode, turbo mode, external monitor connected'. Jarrod has commented under his video he'll post his test results with the external eGPU on Friday, hopefully we'll know better by then. Smile

@musschrott, Agree 100% ... never just take one source for sure!

Jarod, I get it, I'm subscribed!!! Show us the eGPU already. I just don't see why they bothered with the 1650 for the life of me. Xe graphics aren't half bad, and 1650 is ancient.

Can't wait for some data to come out for the 3080M. Love my XPS 13 though, so maybe upgrade that to Tiger Lake and eGPU w/ 6800XT? Lord, I dunno. Just looking for 60-100FPS solid 1440P on high (not ultra).

Maybe barking up the wrong tree entirely with eGPUs. The on die thunderbolt controller seems really encouraging - but this 8x solution seems to be the best opportunity overall.

Any thoughts / input welcome, or further Flow reviews if discovered! Thanks All.

DECISION: Asus Flow X13 w/ XG 3080 mobile OR HP Spectre 1165G7 tiger lake w/ tb4 and RX6800XT and eGPU???? Please assist!!!

Jarrod's latest review on the X13, unfortunately he decided to do his reviews as piecemeal. This mainly focusses on the difference between 3080 vs 1650, in which unsurpringly the 3080 is a lot better. I don't know how comparable those results are to his earlier results posted in the 3070 (125+15W) vs 3080 (90+15W) laptop comparison, but assuming it's done under the same conditions the external 3080 usually seems to land around the 3070 result, which wouldn't be to great given the higher wattage and better chip the 3080 should have.

I am incredibly impatient, and so just threw this together from JTs data. Apologies if I made any errors, but wow this thing it good. REALLY good for the size. Want some more data points, but think this is really the way to go as long as the thermals aren't completely nuts.

TL:DR - Flow is 10-30% higher FPS than a tiger lake gen4 TB laptop with a RTX 3090 eGPU. Wow.

That's impressive. It stands to reason that this is probably either CPU bound or TB latency/bandwidth bound as the 1080 delta is much wider than the 1440 delta. It's hard to come up with a definitive reasoning behind which between CPU and TB is the bottleneck or what percentage each contributes. I think if we could do this again with better 11th Gen CPUs that have embedded TB4 controllers that can compete better with that Ryzen 5000 series we would have a more definitive answer. Like the 6c/12t i5-11400H or the i7 11th Gen H CPUs. I don't think the i7-11370/11375 are going to be enough, but if we can definitively see those 35W CPUs close the gap a little we could draw some CPU limitation conclusions. I can't wait until later this year when we see some TB4 sporting laptops that have high performance H series in them. Should be interesting.

I've come to the conclusion that I'm not interested in buying what Asus did here because I hear the fan noise is real and I don't want that laptop either.. but I'm interested in the foundation of what they did here if they can put that 8x connection in a completely different pair of products.

Agree on fan noise being a concern.

Problem for me is I want the 2 in 1 small form factor. Prefer my XPS13 or a Spectre to the Flow, but not a deal breaker. The 11400H will not be in this class of laptop, worst luck.

The ideal solution would be a regular eGPU with this connection type to enable 3.0 x8 lanes. Ain't going to happen though unfortunately. I pray it does as I think you do too!

JT posted a review of the best TDP implantation of the 3080 mobile (150W) in MSI GE76 10UH :

It's a power house laptop with 10980HK / 64Gb 3200MHz / RTX 3080 mobile @ 150W

The X13 + 3080 eGPU seems to keep up really good in all benchmarks.

U.S. Availability update

The Asus store just now showed availability of the 1200p 16GB version... "while supplies last". I got my order in! 😉
Asus Store [Update: Asus store sold out in under an hour. I had used to VisualPing to catch mine.]

Best Buy is still pending with the 4K 32GB version.
Best Buy

Also, here's a good NotebookCheck review. It doesn't go as much into the eGPU performance yet, but it's helpful.

Can you use the new pcie gen 4 m.2 slots in Intel laptops for an eGPU connection? Would be as good as the asus connector.
