Will the Razer Blade run more quietly with an egpu?

Hey there,

so I'd like to know if my Razer Blade (2015 - gtx970m) will run more quietly when paired with an external GPU (via EXP GDC Beast v.9 mPCIe)?
I'd think so, because the internal GPU wouldn't be active and thus doesn't need to be cooled. Only the cpu.

Just fyi: I've already asked this question in this thread.

Cheers!

Barely I'd say. Your dgpu will still be at +- 40°C even if not used (unless totally disabled) and your cpu won't put out any less heat. There will probably be a difference, but nothing special.

I guess it depends on the laptop and usage. Will it run cooler ? definitely. But if it will run quieter is another story. My fan goes at 100% when the cpu goes over 75°C (set in Bios). And at full cpu load even with 0% load on either gpu, it still goes at 100%. Even when gaming, when the cpu is not stressed to the max it stays on the 75°C line.

Here you have a screenshot with only eGPU fully stressed with Valley and CPU fully stressed with Aida. (dGPU at 0%)

In both instances the laptop fan is at 100% and loud as fu*k. And as I said, even when gaming, the temperature is still above the 100% fan threshold temperature. But there is a noticeable decrease in temperatures with the egpu. So again...depends on the cooling system, bios settings, etc. In my case, there is no noticeable noise difference.

I know this thread is a month old, but I just wanted to chime in for anyone looking at this combo. I have a Razer blade 2017 1060.

Normally, running games maxed out spins the fans up so loud I can barely hear game audio. When using the Node, the fans do not turn on at all. Completely silent.

Using an eGPU is a massive improvement for temperatures and for performance.

Ha! Thanks for the info julianpoyo! I've also upgraded to the 2017 model a few weeks ago. Blades are so worth it.

But I wonder, how loud does the node get? Louder than your usual gaming PC?
